Finding your style

25th September 2018 by Expat Living 3 Min Read

https://expatliving.sg/street-style-singapore-stylist-florence-sorgini/

Meet Canadian expat Florence Sorgini, who is a personal and editorial stylist. We chatted to her for our regular Style Hunter column, where we feature an expat with a distinctive street style, and got her to spill on where she loves to shop!

Her story…

I’m originally from Toronto, Canada and have spent the last five years as an expat. I previously lived in Dubai, and I moved to Singapore eight months ago with my husband and two children.

Her style…

I have a good sense of what I want the world to see me as. My personal style could be described as classic with a splash of femininity; my favourite accessory is a beautiful smile.

Style hunter

Her favourite shops…

It’s my job to research brands, and since I moved to Singapore, Elohim by Sabrina Goh stands out for its unique silhouettes and interesting textiles. Also, Maisonzhou for its luxury sleepwear that can also be worn as outerwear. These two brands are at the top of my list of favourite local finds! What’s more, I can’t make it through ION without visiting Alice and Olivia, or Maje. I guess these brands are a bit nostalgic for me. They remind me of North America and of Dubai, where I first discovered them. I also can’t forget the store Gentle Monster. Who doesn’t love trying on sunglasses?

Her top style tip…

I believe the first step to finding your style is to experiment. Take the time to figure out what it is: feminine, classic, casual or creative? Although the climate does influence to some degree the way we dress, we shouldn’t let it dictate our entire wardrobe. In the styling workshops that I host, I advocate shopping smart, having fun with fashion, and always accessorising!

Her wardrobe must-have…

I can’t live without my little white silk camisoles. I own a few different styles. Silk is perfect for the Singapore weather, and you can pair them with denim and flats for a day look, or easily dress them up by adding a touch of leather, sparkle and heels!

Something interesting…

I’ve been called Florence since I was a little girl, but it isn’t actually my name. Only a select few people call me by my real name. To the rest of the world, I’m Florence Sorgini!

Florence wears skirt and basket bag from Bali, shoes by Aldo, a camisole by Club Monaco and earrings from Kensington Market, Toronto

Her guilty pleasures…

Watching Netflix while filling up my Neta-Porter shopping cart, although I only purchase occasionally. My e-closet is so much more exciting than my real one!

Her favourite shopping place overseas…

Every summer I head home to Toronto, Canada, and Kensington Market is always at the top of my list. It’s this cute bohemian neighbourhood with little indie shops and vintage boutiques. I always come home with a unique accessory.

The rain and cold winds getting you down? A warm beverage and maybe a good book to snuggle up to might just chase the blues away!

If hot chocolate is too mainstream for you, could we offer up this red velvet alternative? @littlefarms have a wide selection of oat milks, almond milks and soy milk options.

Since it's #Veganuary, we recommend using dairy free milks to recreate this recipe....

2 cups non-dairy milk of choice
4 medjool dates (pitted)
1 tablespoon cacao powder
1/2 teaspoon beet powder

Add the milk and dates into a saucepan.
Heat, over medium, until it reaches a simmer. Add the warm milk with the dates and the remaining ingredients into a high speed blender.
Blend until completely smooth and creamy. Serve and enjoy!

Let’s raise a glass to welcome 2021 🥂

As we welcome the start of a new year, it’s time to look back at the year that was.

Obviously, a standard review of 2020 would be dominated by one global issue, however, we’ve decided to avoid any mention of the C-word and instead, we’re taking a look at some of the other things that happened in 2020
month by month, from pop culture phenomena to mystery objects in our deserts and skies (full link in our stories)

Enjoy – and have a wonderful 2021!
