Having moved here 12 years ago, Jordanian-born Nadia Al Sheikh now considers Singapore her second home. She tells us how and why she founded Deal’n, a social enterprise that empowers the less advantaged with opportunities to earn a living using their skills and talents.
Tell us the story behind Deal’n.
In my journey as a single mother, I’ve discovered that determination, flexibility, assertiveness and believing in yourself are the pillars of innovation. Deal’n was born after years of working experience, groundwork in volunteering with various NGOs that helped me understand the needs of our community, and learning while pursuing my masters degree in “Consulting and Coaching for Change in Organisational and Individuals Behaviour” from INSEAD. The knowledge I learned in my journey provided me with the right tools to transform a vision into a module that incorporates philanthropy and business.
Deal’n provides users with opportunities, solutions and tools to empower themselves. I believe that by empowering others you empower yourself! The platform creates opportunities for everyone to earn an income based on their skills, talents and expertise. The traditional job market is very competitive and has many restrictions. As a result, we have many individuals with tremendous experiences, who aren’t able to work due to multiple factors. They end up frustrated and this has an impact on their emotional health. Deal’n provides users with endless opportunities for improvement and innovation. It’s an evolving industry that challenges each and every person to utilise all their abilities to claim a slice of the pie.
Who is it mostly for?
Our aim is to empower users, especially the vulnerable members of our community, to earn a steady income by providing them with the opportunities and solutions. We try to reach out to our beneficiaries through NGOs, government organisations, Facebook groups and personal referrals.
We also tailor workshops like basic business marketing, sales techniques and utilising social media, to help our users transform their ideas into businesses. Our platform introduces their products and services to a worldwide market, thus increasing their selling potential.
