Sports fans, listen up! The prestigious SMBC Singapore Open is back again, with the action taking place from 17 to 20 January 2019 at Serapong Course, Sentosa Golf Club. Among the top international golfers playing is American golfer Davis Love III. We asked him about his career and his expectations for his Singapore debut.
#1 When did you start playing golf?
My father was a club pro and teacher, which meant I started playing as soon as I could walk! I knew at around 12 years old that I wanted to be a pro like my Dad, so I started the work to be a college/amateur player trying to make the Tour.
#2 What are you looking forward the most to during the tournament?
Exploring a country I’ve never been to – and traveling with my son, Dru. He’ll also be participating in the tournament. I’m also excited to see such a famous course.
#3 You’ve had a huge golfing career full of memorable moments; what stands out the most?
There have been many special moments – PGA Championships, Ryder Cups, The World Golf Hall of Fame and more. I’ve have had a blessed career!
#4 What have been some of the biggest challenges along the way?
Losing my father, coach and best friend early in my career was a challenge. Injuries and surgeries have slowed me down lately, but I’ve pressed on.
#5 Any pro golfing tips to offer?
Use your rangefinder on the practice tee to learn how far you hit each club – especially the wedges!
#6 What’s one thing that you love most about golf?
Competing against the best players in the world.
#7 What do you enjoy doing when you’re away from the sport?
Anything outdoors such as fishing, hunting and snowboarding, and spending time with my granddaughters.
#8 Any advice for golfers who are thinking of pursuing the sport professionally?
Get good coaches, create a plan for golf and fitness, and then work hard and stick with it.
#9 You’ve played golf all over the world; what are some of your favourite courses?
Seminole and Mountain Lake in Florida, Chicago Golf Club, and Greenbrier Old White in West Virginia; I love the classic design.
#10 What’s a key value or attitude you believe a successful golfer should possess?
Patience!
