Shopping in Singapore: Your go-to destination for independent lifestyle, home, kids and fashion labels

A huge 7,000-square-foot treasure trove of shopping inspiration, Chillax Market is home to over fifty independent brands (many new to Singapore and exclusive to Chillax) covering all key lifestyle areas; women’s fashion, accessories and shoes, men’s fashion (I found Hubby’s birthday present here – he’s next to impossible to buy for), kids’ and babies’ toys and fashion, home and décor, art, flowers, stationery, books, a  cafè and soon-to-open boutique beauty and hair salon. All under one roof.

So there’s definitely no need to be traipsing through multiple malls, parking lots, taxi queues and navigating the over/under-passes of Orchard Road. (Goodbye, shopping stress!)

It’s no wonder then, that when one of us here at EL is looking for that perfect gift, we head straight to The Grandstand at Turf City for the inspiring, spacious, relaxing experience at Chillax Market.

We love that Chillax is always on the lookout for new labels, bringing in one new brand per month per department and constantly changing things around – there’s a new discovery waiting each time you visit. Despite the sheer number of beautiful products, it somehow manages to not feel overwhelming. It’s flooded with natural light and expertly laid out; you really can ‘see’ what they’ve got.

Be inspired by their monthly showcase

Each month, one of their lifestyle departments is showcased in a special event.  During October, it’ll be ‘Fabulous Fashion’ featuring 25 brands of women’s clothing, jewellery and accessories, including pop up labels What the Frock, True Boutique and lavanu. Stylist Annabel Kerman will be offering complimentary personal shopper sessions from 19 October and great styling tips throughout the month.

Got the kids in tow?

Normally this would signal military precision shopping or a postponed trip. But not at Chillax. A fabulous ‘kids’ corner’ with plenty of toys will keep your little ones occupied. And, if you fancy a quick caffeine hit, the café overlooks the kids’ area – ingenious shop design!
Aside from freshly-brewed coffee and delicious cupcakes, the revamped Chillax Café, is the perfect space for lifestyle events. Crafty blog Stuff Susie Made will be hosting a ‘Quiet Book Workshop’ (learn to make a quiet kiddies’ book from felt) and Crochet lessons and there’s a Vietnamese cookery workshop (spring rolls and chicken salad) coming up. Best to book in advance for these; check out their Facebook page for more details.

Looking for a gift that’s ‘elegantly Singapore’?

Chillax also offers products with a distinctive Singapore flavour, so it’s the perfect place to find that special gift for friends back home. Mark the morning of 23 October, when hotelier-turned-tile-aficionado Victor Lim will be launching his book, Peranakan Tiles, at Chillax Café. His company specialises in tile restoration of conserved shophouses and Chinese temples, with a personal collection numbering over 10,000 tiles; his book is going to be stunning!

Gift vouchers are available – great for that extremely-hard-to-buy-for-friend and, if you need another reason to visit, they’ve recently introduced a loyalty card. Spend $50 to receive a stamp; accumulate 12 stamps (easy peasy, given the variety of great products) and you’ll get $50 off there and then.

What’s coming up?

From the beginning of October, Chillax Café welcomes the delicious Swirls Bake Shop as it’s new partner, their second outlet after sweet success in Robertson Quay. Keep a look out for the launch of Chillax Hair salon, free personal shopper sessions, and loads of Halloween action for the kids. November brings a Jennifer Lim woodblock print workshop (3 Nov) as well as an exhibition and sales throughout the month by artist Diana Francis.

Plan your trip

We know, Turf City can be a little daunting, so follow these top tips:  there’s free parking in front of the rugby fields and the quickest way to find Chillax is to take Lift 4 (the one near Giant, opposite Boost Juice Bar) up to Level 3. If you’re coming by cab, is about a two-minute walk from the taxi stand to the lift. And, there’s a shuttle bus too.

Check out their new Chillax Market website and Facebook page for upcoming events.
