What do you look for in a mascara? We love a dark, non-smudge formula that thickens and lengthens the lashes without clumping. A good waterproof mascara is a big plus, especially in humid Singapore! What mascaras in Singapore work for you, here are our recommendations and we’d love to hear from you!
Urban Decay’s Troublemaker Mascara
I’ve stuck with my Maybelline rocket volume mascara for a few years now – it’s my go-to because the formula is thick without being too gloopy and it volumises nicely. Urban Decay’s Troublemaker Mascara ($38) makes some bold claims on its uber-cool packaging; it promises to give super-fat, super-long, sex-proof lashes. (I’m assuming it makes that last claim to survive sweat, rather than tears.)
The wand is fairly thin, so you need three or four applications to really get some volume going, but once on it definitely stays on. The mascara survived a super-sweaty gym session without smudging – so, if wearing full makeup while you work out (or in any other hot and heavy situation) is your thing, this is a great mascara to have.
I’ll be returning to my Maybelline staple, but this is a good extra to have in my makeup bag.

Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara
I’m always on the lookout for a deep black mascara that not only volumises and lengthens, but also stays on throughout the day and keeps my under-eyes smudge-free. The Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara promises all of that for $44, and I was eager to try it.
While it did bring the drama with the look of super-long and thick false lashes, it didn’t deliver on its smudge proof promises. My eyelashes looked fabulous when I left the house, but I returned home with under-eye flakes aplenty. To be fair, it would probably wear better in a less humid climate; perhaps I’ll save it for my next trip to the US!

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara
Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara ($42) is designed to look and work like a hair roller. The quirky, rubber-like pink wand is easy to grasp and manoeuvre with the recommended “wiggling” action. The curved brush has tiny hooks to separate, lift and curl lashes – promising a wide-eyed, mega-curl look.
From the first use, I was impressed with how well this mascara grabbed and separated my lashes without the usual clumping or spiky look I often get with lash-building mascaras. Plus, there was no smudging after a full day of wear! Although I still need to use an eyelash curler to get a lasting curl, this mascara works wonders for definition, and I will definitely continue using it.
