The award-winning musical Kinky Boots is on in Singapore from now until 14 October. It’s an amazing and powerful show that highlights the belief that you can “change the world when you change your mind”.
Charlie Price struggles to live up to his father’s expectations and continue his legacy within the family shoe-making business, Price & Son, based in Northampton. Lola, a flamboyant performer looking for some impressive new stiletto boots, arrives just in the nick of time, catapulting the business onto the catwalks of Milan.
This is a fantastic, energetic and fun piece of live theatre. The performers put on a great show, leaving us envious of Lola and her drag queens with their perfect moves and extremely toned bodies. It’s full of one-liners that made us giggle all the way through. I particularly loved the boxing scene for the Fisticuffs Championship and the perfectly executed slow-motion moves. The songs are powerful – and sung perfectly – and the show runs seamlessly.
Kinky Boots is performed by an American touring cast who have really done a marvellous job in perfecting their British accents. They also do their own makeup. I think I need some tips – plus some new sexy boots, because, as they say, the best way to fit in is to stand out!
Direction and choreography is by two-time Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde, Hairspray) and the book is by Broadway legend and four-time Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage Aux Folles). Kinky Boots is the winner of six Tonys including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Choreography.
