My husband’s half-Indonesian family discovered Tambuah Mas’s authentic cuisine from the Padang, Sulawesi and Java regions more than 15 years ago, and have been loyal customers since then.
Regulars come far and wide for its signature fare. The kepala ikan istimewa ($22.90), a red snapper fish-head curry marinated in tamarind and then simmered in sweet-and-sour gravy with hints of chilli and other spices, will typically have a party of 10 or more gathered closely round it, all laughing loudly and reaching for the next bite.
Another of the restaurant’s staples is its original tahu talor ($8), a tower of beancurd and battered egg, fried to perfect crispness and doused with a spicy-sweet dark sauce. Its milder taste makes it great for kids, and it’s also ideal for vegetarians.
My carnivorous husband’s favourite is the beef rendang ($7.90), a heaped portion of spicy shredded beef curry; there’s always plenty left to take home with us – lucky, as my home-cooked version falls sadly flat by comparison.
I’m already regretting writing this, because the popularity of this authentic, home-style Indonesian treasure only continues to grow. Though it’s tucked away on the fourth floor, it’s advisable to book ahead. Selamat Makan!
