Having the set lunch at Relais & Chateaux member St Pierre is an excellent way to experience some of the best French cuisine in Singapore, without breaking the bank. You choose from a menu of four starters, four mains and four desserts (including a cheese platter), and pay $28, $38 or $45 for two, three or four courses respectively.

I started with virtuously light but delectably creamy celeriac and truffle soup, while Debra delighted in the pan-fried tuna loin with avocado pudding and balsamic reduction, a mini-symphony of textures and flavours. Yes, of course I tried hers! Classically pan-fried foie gras was also available, at an $8 surcharge.

My braised lamb au jus with roasted garlic puree and aubergine caviar was so tender, juicy and richly aromatic that I’m still salivating at the thought of it. I felt guilty sampling Deb’s yummy tiger prawn ravioli (purely in the name of research, you understand), especially as it was a decidedly undersized portion: just one more would have done the trick.

There’s a surcharge of $8 for the impressive cheese platter, and Grandma Stroobant’s flourless Belgian chocolate cake is the hugely popular signature dessert. Wine is available by the glass at reasonable prices, the bread is gorgeous, the service is impeccable and unrushed, and every item is presented with care and panache. Treat yourself!
