Restaurant Review: Shahi Maharani

Mmm... wine

Shahi Maharani
#03-21B Raffles City Shopping Centre
(Level 3, The Fairmont Hotel)
(+65) 6235 8840

Walking through the doors of the Shahi Maharani, you find yourself in a soothing evocation of a North Indian royal palace, a fantastic contrast from the hustle and bustle of Raffles City Shopping Centre. The décor features mahogany panels accentuated by red and gold, a regal Moghul setting right in the middle of Singapore.

After asking our enthusiastic waiter for his suggestions, we ordered an array of signature Indian food dishes to share between us. His superb recommendations included: raan sikandra ($30), young and tender leg of lamb that is spiced, roasted and coated with a special sauce; and chicken makhanusala ($21), also known as butter chicken, with garlic naan on the side for dunking in the thick and creamy sauce. My husband particularly enjoyed the sizzling rogan josh ($21), a classic lamb curry made with Kashmiri dry red chillies.

We finished off our Pinot Noir, and the homemade ice cream slipped down as the flow of music from two Nepalese musicians floated around us. We left with satisfied stomachs: the portions are large and require a healthy appetite.
