It’s almost compulsory for decorators of Mexican restaurants to strew the walls with gringo kitsch. Margarita’s on Dempsey Hill is no exception. Here, though, tradition sits well alongside contemporary touches like striking red, orange and blue walls, rattan chairs and large potted plants.
This is one of the Mexican ambassador’s favourite haunts, so you know you’re in for a treat with a menu that serves both Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican fare. It’s a full, noisy house most nights, so we visited for a laid-back, casual lunch – sans margaritas, sadly. (The potent Margarita Grande comes highly recommend by my editor. You have been warned.)
We munched on the Chicken Grande taco salad ($18.50), which was just as the menu described it – a huge tortilla basket filled with lots of fresh, crisp vegetables and tender grilled chicken fillets. This would make a great starter to share.
For mains, the mixed fajitas ($32 for chicken or beef) are worth savouring. The strip loin made a grand entrance, sizzling and spitting. Tender and juicy, as was the chicken, it didn’t disappoint.
We saved the best for last. The Capirotada Mexican bread pudding ($12) was the nicest I have ever tasted. (Sorry, Gran!) Made with croissants, stuffed with nuts, apricots and raisins and served with Grand Marnier custard, it was the star of the day.
