QUICKIE

Brush up on your maths!

  1. A hamster weighs one kilogram plus half the weight of the hamster. How much does the hamster weigh?
  2. Divide 30 by ½ and add 10. What’s the answer?
  3. Draw one straight line anywhere in the following sum to make it correct: 5 + 5 + 5 = 550

#1 The answer is 2 kilograms. The hamster weighs 1kg plus half the hamster, or “half the hamster + half the hamster”. That means that half the hamster is equal to 1 kilogram. Therefore the full hamster is 2 kilograms. (No hamsters were halved in creating and solving this puzzle!)

#2 No, it’s not 25! The answer is 70. You’re dividing 30 by a half, not by two; 30 divided by ½ is equal to 30 muliplied by 2, which is 60. Add 10 and you get 70.

#3 Just add the straight line to the first plus sign and you can change it to a four: so, “5 + 5” becomes “5 4 5”; and 545 plus 5 equals 550.
