Preschools in Singapore: Little gardeners wanted for this outdoor classroom

Looking for a preschool that’ll expose your condo kid to the great outdoors? Hello, The Garden House Preschool! With daily gardening sessions, homegrown organic grub, a team of super-dedicated teachers and a unique, Reggio-inspired curriculum for children between 18 months to 5 years old, this preschool in Upper Bukit Timah knows the secret to lifelong learning – and it starts with a a daily dose of Vitamin D!

Founded by mama-of-two Ana Packham-Cooper in 2013, The Garden House Preschool champions the importance of outdoor play (yes, even when it’s drizzling!) to stimulate physical and mental development, along with organic, low GI food that’s nutritionist-approved and makes children feel happy and healthy. And, they’re taking applications for their preschool and parent-accompanied programmes for January 2016 now, so make an appointment for a school tour and register your little one for next year.

With no fixed lesson plans, no specific class durations and definitely no homework assignments, The Garden House Preschool’s teaching team (aka Early Childhood Education experts) use an emergent curriculum, which basically means that children are given the freedom to learn at their own pace, while doing what interests them – whether that’s building castles in the sandpit, getting messy with water or paint, taking charge of their own plot or harvesting veggies for lunch. Happy children, happy parents!

Sunhats and suncreen on, taking the classroom outside has heaps of learning benefits for little learners, including the development of social, communication, problem-solving and motor skills, as well as teaching respect for their environment. There are open-plan indoor classrooms, too, for story-time, play-time and rainy or hazy days, with eco-friendly furniture, big open windows, ceiling fans and air-con in the toddlers’ room.

So, which programme is for your child? There are preschool programmes for children between 18 months and 5 years old, offering daily Mandarin through music, movement and art, as well as two parent-accompanied programmesSproutling every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3-4.30pm for children aged between 15 months and 3 years of age to socialise and explore new themes each week alongside mummy and daddy, and Seedling, a 50-minute musical play experience for mums and bubs from 6 months old, held every Wednesday. And, then there are holiday programmes, too, which offer a perfect taster of the school’s curriculum!
