Now facelifts can be non-surgical and non-invasive. This facelift in Singapore uses painless High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU). We sent Danielle Rossetti to Bio Aesthetic for a review!
How it works
HIFU uses ultrasound technology to reach three different depths of the skin, in order to deliver focused beams of 60 to 70 degrees Celsius without disrupting the skin surface. These beams will melt the fats in the face, while tightening the skin and boosting collagen production; this allows your skin to continually lift and tone after the treatment.
Review: Non-surgical facelift using HIFU
As I rapidly approach the age of 50, my fear of pain and the side effects of surgical aesthetic procedures has not reduced at all. So, when I was offered a trial of this non-invasive ultrasound facelift at Bio Aesthetic, I jumped at the chance.
The appointment was an hour long, including the initial consultation and treatment. I met with Dr Vijay who advised the process would take around 20 to 30 minutes for my whole face and neck area. Some people only need a 10-minute treatment if they focus on just one section, but clearly I could do with more help!
He identified my saggy jowls, double chin and droopy eyebrows, which could all benefit from the lifting and tightening procedure. I was asking a lot of questions, but Dr Vijay was very calm in assuring me that it doesn’t really hurt and there is very little downtime needed. He also gave me a few aftercare tips, such as staying out of the sun afterwards.
Only a doctor can administer the HIFU device, which is also reassuring. Dr Vijay mentioned that the effects will be visible after a few weeks to a month when the collagen growth is starting. The results are at their peak three to six months after the treatment, and you may see the need to return for a maintenance session once every nine to 12 months.
After I laid down on the medical bed in the adjacent office, Dr Vijay applied a gel to conduct the ultrasound (similar to having a baby scan) and began. Working in sections, he went over the area in tiny increments; the probe he put against my skin buzzed and fizzed a little with each “burst” of ultrasound energy. The feeling was not painful but set my teeth on edge, a bit like a dentist’s drill. After a while, I relaxed into the sensation and hardly noticed it. The probes are different sizes for different areas, like where there is bone close to the surface and you can’t send the device too deep, or around the delicate eye area.
Immediately afterwards, they showed me my face in the mirror and it was quite red. I heard that a potential side effect was the burning of the skin, so I was a bit stressed out, but Dr Vijay said it was very normal. He reassured me that there had been no burning and the redness would go down after an hour or so. I warned everyone at home but by the time I returned, he was right – it was back to normal. I did have a dull ache around my jawbone area for a couple of days afterwards, but nothing that made me want to take painkillers or anything.
The whole process was fuss-free, and it was a painless facelift. It’s definitely something I would look at doing again if it means delaying any more invasive forms of anti-ageing treatments.
