Forget what you’ve heard about East Timor and for real adventure jump on a plane to Dili, and make for Atauro Island. Visible from the north coast of Dili, Atauro boasts beautiful coral reefs perfect for snorkelling and diving. Its rural fishing villages have weekend markets selling local produce. After a day in the water, watch the stunning sunset, beer in hand, while you feast on fresh barbecued fish before retreating to your eco-lodge or hut.
SilkAir offers thrice-weekly direct flights to Dili. The two-and-a-half-hour Nakroma ferry ride leaves Dili every Saturday at 9am for Atauro and returns at 3pm. Those who wish to stay longer may like to strike a deal with fishermen for transport.
