Learning for the Future at Nexus

27th May 2022 by Patricea Chow 3 Min Read

https://expatliving.sg/nexus-international-secondary-school-singapore-learning-experience/

Learners at Nexus International School are “Learning for the Future”. This is the school’s ethos that guides learners to become independent for life beyond secondary school. The school focuses on every child’s mindset, their relationships, their sense of inclusion, and their capacity to innovate. It combines learning experiences within and beyond the classroom in various learning environments. This help learners develop a creative mindset, critical thinking skills, strong supportive relationships, an understanding of their own impulse and empathy for others.

DR HEATHER MILLINGTON, Head of Secondary School, says: “We empower our learners by creating innovative learning and leadership opportunities so they can take a productive part in global society.”

Five ways Nexus creates its unique learning experience

#1 Transformative learning experiences

Children work best in stimulating and creative environments. The personalised approach at Nexus means they can experiment and reflect on their learning. By giving learners the opportunity to choose how and where they learn, we empower them to build agency, independence and self-confidence.

The school was purposefully designed and built with innovative learning environments at the centre of the decision-making. In the mock boardroom, learners can run their companies for Junior Achievement and other entrepreneurial activities. The learning hubs were designed with tables, walls and windows that can be written on. This encourages innovation and creativity in our learners.

By giving Nexus learners the opportunity to choose how and where they learn, the school empowers them to build independence and self-confidence.

#2 Teachers who are constantly learning

Inspired learning starts with highly motivated and professional teachers. More than 80% of Nexus teachers have more than five years of teaching experience and hold two or more professional qualifications; 43% of the teachers hold a master’s degree; 57% of the classroom assistants have degrees.

The school deliberately employ staff from across the globe who are able to speak a range of languages to help their learners communicate and build confidence.

#3 Enjoyable learning environment

Nexus strives to ensure that learners are in an enjoyable and happy school environment for their learning. An emphasis of this is social values such as openness in communication, respecting and caring for each other and acting with integrity.

Nexus parents Ray and Laura relate the experience of their boys Freddie (11) and Max and Theo (5): “The boys love their teachers and teaching assistants at Nexus. The school provide such a happy and nurturing environment with excellent teaching standards. The kids have also responded really well to the IB style of education. In particular, Freddie has been challenged, motivated and encouraged to be an independent and innovative learner in secondary school.”

#4 Specialist interests

Complementing academics are more than 90 co-curricular activities for learners to choose from. These range from traditional choices such as Model United Nations, choir, swimming, chess club, rugby and netball to contemporary options such as golf, Lego robotics, race car engineering, Irish dancing and Dungeons & Dragons.

Learners who have a passion for performance arts can nurture their passion and skills through various programmes at Nexus. Those who enjoy music are guided by an in-house team of professional and experienced music teachers in the Instrumental Music Programme. Those with an interest in drama, literature and poetry can fine tune their communication delivery through the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA) programme.

Student-athletes have many opportunities to compete. Nexus is a member of the Athletic Conference of Singapore International Schools, which provides a broad and balanced inter-school athletic programme.

#5 Purpose-built facilities designed for growing minds

The campus features state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor facilities to aid creative learning. The school is one of only three Apple Distinguished Schools in Singapore. This distinction is given to schools who have demonstrated education excellence, a commitment to innovation and learning environments that aim to stimulate, inspire and impact students’ lives.
