Hands up all those who want a better audio experience from their home entertainment system? We’re with you on that! Happily, two recently released products from Sony, the HT-MT500 and HT-MT300 soundbar, offer a very simple solution, whether you’re watching movies, listening to music or playing video games. Here’s what we like most about them.
Though the HT-MT500 and HT-MT300 differ in some technical respects (see #4, below), both have a super compact design. This is especially good news for expats who tend to move apartment or even country a lot. (Maybe it’s time to ditch that multi-stack hi-fi you’ve been lugging around for years!) Each comes in two parts: the soundbar itself, whose ultra-slim design fits easily in front or alongside your television, plus a wireless subwoofer that tucks discreetly under your sofa in a horizontal position, or upright at one end. In short, there’s virtually zero compromise on your room space. Oh, and don’t be worried about the sound getting muffled from under the sofa: Sony’s Sofa Mode optimises bass frequencies and eliminates sound loss from cushions.
We love the look of these soundbars; they’re beautifully crafted, with soft angles to align with furniture and sit in
harmony with any room. They’re available in crème white or charcoal black – neutral colours that will complement a space, regardless of its décor. This is another bonus for families on the move.
The HT-MT500 and HTMT300 both emulate cinema-style surround sound through the speakers in the soundbar itself and the separate subwoofer. A Sony unique technology called S-Force PRO Front Surround works to provide virtual surround sound in your living room. (In non-tech terms, this means you’ll feel like you’re right there in the middle of that car chase!) Additionally, the HT-MT500 supports High-Resolution Audio, so it can clean up and enhance compressed or “lossy” sound formats.
It’s here where the specs of the two soundbars differs to a degree. Both products offer support for Bluetooth and NFC, and you can control playback and change settings with ease from your smartphone; also, a USB port in the back allows you to connect devices for easy playback. The HTMT500, though, has some exciting additional features, including giving the listener access to over 100 music-streaming apps – plus, the push of a button allows you to carry on playing the song you were last listening to on your Spotify account. Sounds good to us.
