A Cool New Bar at CHIJMES
If you are wondering where all the young and hip people of Singapore are hanging out on a Friday evening, it’s at Almost Famous. The newly opened craft beer bar, located in CHIJMES, is as minimalist as it gets. Grey is the predominant colour, with steel and concrete dominating the interior. But, this doesn’t mean it’s dreary. The space, though stark and purposely minimalist, is buzzing and alive.
The service area isn’t large but it doesn’t have to be, as there are no brands, logos and bottles to show. The plain wall behind the bar houses 16 chrome taps; these are the vessels to the ever-changing and diverse beer menu.
We put our taste buds in the hands of Kenny Lee (the brainchild behind Almost Famous). Kenny is very passionate about how beer and food should work together.
The Chosen One:
I tried the Zeffer Apple Crumble ($14) first. It actually smelled and tasted like your nana’s apple crumble! I normally struggle to drink beer because the bubbles fill me up too much. Almost Famous beers are different – light, refreshing and very easy to drink. There’s also a small range of wines and non-alcoholic beverages on offer.
Bite on this:
We tried the Luxurious Fries ($16) with truffle and caviar. Kenny matched this with a glass of Pilsner Urquell ($10) from the “Almost Craft Beer” section of the menu; it was poured in a particular way to give it huge, creamy, dissolving foam. The Tom Yum Gyoza ($10) was paired with the Mango Salad Sour ($14), which tasted sweet with the food but sour without. The Chocolate Stout ($14) was served to complement the simple Chicken & Waffles ($14).
Last but not least:
If you feel the cold like me, take a jumper. It’s a little chilly inside!
