National Day: Great places to celebrate in Singapore on August 9 2013

If you’ve decided against taking a short break over the August public holiday in favour of staying in Singapore for National Day on August 9, there are all sorts of options for you to make the most of the country-wide celebrations. But the most popular event is undoubtedly the Singapore National Day Parade, featuring acrobatic parachutes, roaring fighter jets, speedy boats (er, otherwise known as speed boats) and, of course, the fireworks.

So whether you’re hoping to see the action unfold from the ground, high in the sky or even from your own snazzy room, we’ve listed heaps of fun options to help you plan your day out.

Level with the action

Catch whole shabang from the vantage point of Catalunya, which is practically in the water at the Marina Bay display. Set along the newly built Fullerton Pavilion, this contemporary Spanish restaurant is set inside a glass-encased dome that offers diners a 360-degree panoramic view of the city. Eat up, drink up (you must try the sangria) and stare out of the window, before the party really kicks off with DJ Suren.

From 5pm. $28 includes one drink; minimum spend applies for 6.30pm to 9pm seating from $160 per person. Call 6534 0886 for reservation. Catalunya is located at 82 Collyer Quay, The Fullerton Pavilion. catalunya.sg

Breathtaking aerial views

Standing 200 metres above the ground and facing into the city, Ku De Ta Club Lounge offers a pretty breathtaking view of the National Day celebrations. It’ll feel like you’re inches away from the action during the aerial fly-past. And while there’s a DJ set that’ll see you through the night, this event caters for families too. Kids under 12 get free entry before 9pm, with face paint and other goodies to keep them occupied.

On 3 and 9 August. $38 nett per person including one complimentary housepour . KU DÉ TA Club Lounge is located at 1 Bayfront Avenue, Sands SkyPark, Marina Bay Sands.

Brilliant brews 156 meters up

When it comes to making the most of National Day at Level 33, you’ll need to take up the mindset of divide and conquer. While one of you stakes out a spot at the outdoor terrace, the other should be at the bar grabbing a top class lager or ale. Level 33 has a craft brewery in their penthouse suite 156 metres above ground level, so none of this champers nonsense. Hit the beer while enjoying the panoramic sight of Singapore’s skyline, which offers full views of the light shows and fireworks going down over at Marina Bay.

Level 33 is located at 8 Marina Boulevard, #33-01 Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 1. Call 6834 3133 for reservation. Level33.com.sg

Room with a view (no, an even better view than that)

Stay in the heart of the city and enjoy dazzling views of the fireworks display from the privacy of your own quay-side room. The Fullerton Hotel Singapore offers lots of packages, all of which include a daily American buffet breakfast for two at their Town Restaurant. We suggest getting the Courtyard Room so it’s easy to access the One Fullerton Rooftop for an even better look at the fireworks display.

Promotion valid on 13, 20, 27 July and 3 August. From $468 per night for a Quay Room. Call 6533 8388 for reservations. fullertonhotel.com
