What surprising fact do JK Rowling, Michael Phelps and Lady Gaga have in common? Rowling wrote the Harry Potter series while depressed, swimmer Phelps won his 15th Olympic medal when his depression was at its worst, and Lady Gaga has been treated for depression and anxiety for almost her entire life.
Yes, the surprising fact that all three super-achievers have in common is that while performing at the peak of their careers they were under prolonged professional care for clinical depression. One could say their mental health was in critical condition. To achieve such high accolades, however, one’s mind has to be extraordinarily high-functioning.
These super-achievers were clearly in superb mental health. So why were they under clinical care for years for mental illness? Because they were emotionally distraught, not mentally. That’s also why professionals dealing in mental health have taken years to help them, and almost never cure them, for emotions are not the products of your mind.
A problem of emotions
Having helped heal people around the world with conditions like depression and anxiety disorders for over two decades, I’m confident in saying that 98 percent of mental health issues are actually emotional health issues. Mental health has become a buzzword in recent years but what we are really dealing with is a pandemic of emotional ill-health. Stress and anxiety are the most commonly acknowledged “mental” health conditions, but both stress and anxiety come from fear, which is an emotion – and they are emotions themselves. As a species, we have misconstrued emotional health to be mental health because, for generations across millennia, we have been taught to suppress our emotions as toddlers.
Humans are not just emotional, we are emotionally-driven. The only thing we are ever truly seeking are emotions – love and joy. It’s no wonder that as emotionally driven beings who are emotionally blind, our biggest problems are emotional problems.
When five-year-old Nico’s dad heard he was being bullied at school, he flew into a fit of rage and shouted out threats. His mother, however, remained calm and objective. While we may question his dad’s mental health on account of his reactions, neither he nor his behaviour is the problem. The real problem is his emotional state – he was overcome with fear and anger. These emotions controlled him, while she remained in control. And, it is possible to reduce one’s anger and fear nearly to zero, without suppressing them!
To be happy, you need to be emotionally healthier. Most of us automatically suppress emotions without processing them. Good emotional health is the key not only to lasting inner peace and joy, but also lasting physical health.
Conventional treatments may not provide a cure for emotional or physical pain. That’s why, according to one study, as many as 75 percent of people in Singapore look towards complementary and alternative medicine for help with pain and anxiety.
