Making the cut: Five barbers creating trendy hairstyles for men

Updated on 3rd February 2017 by Susannah Jaffer |

Gone are the days when getting your haircut or beard trimmed was a mundane act of grooming. The new wave of barbers offering hairstyles for men has turned these simple acts into an art form. So whether you’re a metrosexual or a man’s man, you’re going to enjoy visiting these barbershops. You can get your hair cut, your beard styled, indulge in some guy talk and if you want to go the extra mile, get a body wax or your eyebrows groomed. Looking dapper is now just a phone call away.

Chez Vous

If you’re looking for a place where you and your girl can have your hair cut, head to Chez Vous. Set up in 1995, it prides itself in keeping up with the latest trends, techniques and technologies. Spread over a sprawling 2000sqft area it’s divided into zones. You’re greeted at the Hydra Bar where you pick your preferred tea from a selection of Ladurée flavours, after which you settle into any one of the 30 plush styling pods or get a customised treatment at the Cocoon dome. There’s also a private styling sanctuary for discerning customers.

A directors-only salon, you’re assured of only the best. In fact, they go so far as to help you fix your botched haircut under the Chez Vous Expertligent Fix You Programme. Ask for Oscar Lee who is known for his trendy cuts that look as good in the boardroom as they do at the bar. His loyal male expat clientele keep coming back for precision cuts and customised styles.

If you’re looking to remedy scalp issues or need a colour, Serene Tan is your go-to woman. The resident scalp expert will give you a thorough scalp analysis and suggest effective remedies, all the while giving the illusion of depth and volume with precision layering and colouring techniques. Or make an appointment with Thomas Teo, who is popular with male clients for cuts that are as quick as they are impeccable. From the type of taper, to the nape, texture, arches and side burns, you won’t find a hair out of place.

The Golden Rule Barber Co

Established in 2014, this barbershop aims to turn your mundane grooming session into an enjoyable occasion. Step into the laid-back, yet sophisticated space and you’re instantly made to feel at home by the friendly and attentive staff. The next thing you notice are the walls plastered with posters of bands from the ’90s as well as electric guitars – they really love their music – so don’t be surprised if your session is topped with an acoustic set by a local band.

While you’re at The Golden Rule Barber Co, opt for a haircut (they’re skilled in all manner of styles), hot towel shaving or beard sculpting. Regulars swear by Siva, Sri, Alyph, Azri and Jay who will have you walking out in style. Don’t forget to pick up a moustache wax, beard oil, pomade or paste, to keep your hair styled. It’s best to make an appointment before you go. Nevertheless, they try their best to accommodate walk ins.

Cold beer while getting your hair cut? Why not!

Premium Barbers (Barber Spa)

This American-style barbershop is conveniently located at Orchard Central and offers the works. Not only can you get a cut, colour, traditional shave, moustache and beard trim here, you can also indulge in a massage, foot reflexology, a facial or a gentleman’s manicure and pedicure – all while enjoying a glass of merlot or an ice cold beer.

Each cut starts with a scalp assessment, followed by a wash. The attention to detail is impeccable as they neaten any rough edges with a straight razor. Finally, your neck and face are covered in hot towels as they proceed to give you a relaxing neck massage. Ask for the King’s Treasure if you really want to indulge or get the hangover treatment for when you want to rejuvenate your body and mind.

We wouldn’t blame you for thinking you’ve stepped to a gentleman’s club

Jermyn Street

Housed in a heritage shop house at Amoy Street, Jermyn Street is reminiscent of a gentleman’s club with its dapper interiors (think handmade wall paper from England, plush furniture, masculine colour scheme) dedicated manicure and pedicure section, six-seater barber area, VIP enclave, a cosy lounge and bar area. This sophisticated barbershop offers everything from haircuts, hot towel shaves to manicures, pedicures and even eyebrow waxing and grooming.

Make an appointment with Joel, Steve or Dee and get your hair cut and styled, or beard trimmed and shaped while you sip on a refreshing beverage. Or request for an iPad and enjoy some quiet time. If you like the services and the place the handsome venue can also be hired for private parties, cocktail receptions or stag nights.

Hounds of The Baskervilles

Step into HoB, and you feel like you’ve taken a step back in time at this old school, barbershop. Vintage barber chairs, traditional tonsoring tools, framed movie posters, brick walls all add to its traditional charm. One of the pioneers of concept barbershops in Singapore, they’re known for their classic cuts and straight razor shaves which are elevated to works of art. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, they’re also known for their electric tattoo parlour that often hosts guest tattoo artists from around the world.

The strictly men’s only establishment doesn’t take any bookings, so be prepared to wait. Settle into the plush leather sofa, browse their collection of equally old school magazines or enjoy banter with the barbers while you wait your turn.

How cute! Love this Easter twist on devilled eggs 🐣Thanks @expat_kitchen! Instructions below ✨ Full recipe on our site
.
.
.
.Instructions:1. Peel hard-boiled eggs. With a sharp knife, slice off a very thin layer from the base of the egg so it can stand. Cut a generous top off the egg, and set top aside. Using a small melon baller, scoop out the yolk carefully (be careful not to break the white part!).
2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine 10 cooked yolks and mash well with a fork. Add mayonnaise, Dijon, garlic powder and salt. Mash everything together until smooth. Transfer mixture to Ziploc or pastry bag and pipe generously into egg bases. Place top 1/3 back over the base and press down slightly to adhere.
3. For the eyes, poke through an olive with a plastic straw several times, then gently squeeze down the straw, and the little circles of olives will pop right out. For the beaks, thinly slice a few rings of carrot and cut each ring into sixths. Insert two olive spots for the eyes and two carrots wedges for the beak. Set chicks on a platter and garnish with noodles, or parsley or dill to give them that “free range” feel.
