Co-living in Singapore is a relatively new concept for shared accommodation options and the rental property market. It’s increasingly popular for those seeking a creative home living space and a sense of community. You live in an apartment or house with other people and have your own private room (usually with bathroom). The rest of the house and its amenities are shared with other occupants.
When it comes to creating a beautiful home interior, Joana Schiff knows what to do. As the interior designer at luxury co-living company gnômadic, she knows how to work a scatter cushion. She’s a master at arranging a pot plant. She can sniff out a stunning Balinese sideboard at twenty paces. Joana cleverly turns every co-living property she touches into the ultimate Singapore sanctuary.
“Designing a home interior for a co-living space is very different to designing for your own home,” she says. “Ultimately, it’s not about me, but those who’ll be living there. I take inspiration from the places I’ve visited to give our properties a theme or to mimic a certain destination. I’m inspired by architecture in London, artwork in France and landscapes in Italy.”
Global design inspiration
Take the brand’s most recent rental property venture: Meadow. This charming semi-detached landed property in Singapore is nestled behind Orchard Road and covers 4,500 square feet. It boasts five large ensuite bedrooms, plenty of communal areas, a stunning garden and a spacious rooftop terrace.
The design concept of Meadow is influenced by a quintessential country house. “It takes its inspiration from Australia’s Margaret River and encapsulates the idea of farmhouse living,” Joana explains. “The original metal spiral staircase, huge kitchen and wild outdoor greenery were the ideal base for me to transform it into a tropical hideaway with a rural edge.”
As sustainability is at the heart of the brand, they’re mindful not to carry out any large construction to avoid renovation wastage. This also gives Joana the perfect opportunity to show off her artistic flair. “I used environmentally friendly paint throughout. We kept all of the original flooring and recycled the existing furnishings by polishing and re-painting.”
Meadow is decorated in soothing hues of cream and green. Simple artwork is positioned throughout. A photo wall in the communal dining and living areas displays plant images of various colours and textures for a bucolic feel. One lovely unique touch is the fake fireplace that contributes to the overall cosy effect.
Luxury co-living in Singapore
Meadow is a welcome addition to the company’s expanding portfolio which already features three high-end co-living homes: Earth, Twilight and Sky are located in high-end condominiums in Tanglin, Orchard and Oxley respectively. As with Meadow, Joana used her travels as inspiration for the home décor, sourcing furnishings for the properties from Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Bali and China. Exceptionally well-connected within the interior design industry, she says, “I work with a number of reliable suppliers who are actually the manufacturers that export the furniture within Southeast Asia, Europe and America.”
Alongside exquisite design aesthetics, some of gnômadic‘s homes feature facilities such as a gym, a swimming pool and private function rooms. Weekly cleaning, ultra-fast Wi-Fi, and utilities are also part of the package. The company designs a unique and evolving Lifestyle Programme of events (wine tasting or candle making, anyone?) which empowers residents to experience personal growth while bonding with each other. It also works hard to curate a community of individuals who share core traits such as empathy, congeniality and generosity while possessing di
“Our rental properties bring together the comfort and privacy of a home with the luxurious facilities of a hotel,” Joana concludes. “I hope to make every individual feel peaceful and happy in their own space, and for lasting memories to be created.”
High-end hospitality. Amazing locations. A ready-made friendship circle. And a donation to the Rainforest Trust for every new resident. When can we move in?
