How to make a long-distance relationship work

3rd November 2021 by Amy Greenburg 4 Min Read

https://expatliving.sg/long-distance-relationship-advice-expat-in-singapore/

Whether you’ve suddenly found yourself in a long-distance relationship due to travel restrictions or were already in one, you’d probably agree that it’s not always easy. While lovers and friends are just a few taps away, staying emotionally connected from afar has its challenges. Wondering how to make a long-distance relationship work successfully as an expat in Singapore? Here, our friends at Pacific Prime Singapore share some helpful long-distance relationship advice.

#1 Be committed to your long-distance relationship

Know what you’re getting into when you opt in for a long-distance relationship. Not being able to see each other in person on the regular can really take its emotional toll. So, prior to starting or staying in a long-distance relationship, both parties should be truly and equally committed.

#2 Set an end date

Have a plan for what happens next. Are you planning to eventually live in the same place? With an end goal in mind, this will help you push through a number of relationship difficulties. Most importantly, you and your partner will recognise that this situation is not going to last indefinitely.

#3 Stick to a schedule

Any time you have together is precious. So, do show up to your planned meet-ups – online or offline. Also, most relationship advice will tell you to spend as much time together as possible to maintain a healthy long-distance relationship.

#4 Spend time with your partner and be present

Most likely, you won’t get to see your partner every day. So, make it a point to be present on the rare occasions that you do. Remember to take advantage of the fleeting moments you have with each other. This means you should try not to look at your phone all the time whether you’re with your partner physically or digitally.

If your partner is experiencing difficulties in their personal life, show as much support as possible, even if you’re continents apart. Ask yourself, “What would I do if I were there in person?” and try to make it work. For instance, schedule a surprise phone call during your partner’s lunchtime at work.

#5 Plan and do fun things together

Just because you and your partner are apart doesn’t mean you can’t do fun things together. Sometimes, anticipation beats the reward. Make it a ritual to plan for the next time you see each other.

And, if you’re rarely going to meet in person, you can still plan for activities you can do together virtually. For instance, set up a movie night together via Skype or play games through Zoom. Goodnight video calls are also a good idea to stay connected in a healthy relationship.

Additionally, as an expat in Singapore you’ve got plenty of great sites and experiences to share. Give your partner a tour of the city on FaceTime!

long distance relationship tips

#6 Understand your partner’s availability

Get to know what your partner’s work or study schedule is like. Stay in touch through digital channels such as social media or chatting apps. By familiarising yourself with your partner’s availability, you won’t be upset if they are busy all day and don’t reply until later on. Doing so will also help prevent any misunderstandings, frustrations and arguments – the enemy of many long-distance relationships.

#7 Be confident in your long-distance relationship

While communication is key to a healthy relationship from afar, avoid checking in too often with excessive calls and unnecessary texts. This behaviour could come off as insecure and controlling, which may turn your partner off.

#8 Have your own life

Your long-distance relationship can certainly feel like the centre of your universe. You might even stay up late just to wait for your partner’s reply to your text. And, sometimes, you may find yourself missing your partner so much that you don’t feel like doing anything else.

However, keep in mind that you have a life outside of the long-distance relationship. As an expat in Singapore, do what you enjoy, and experience life in your new home country.

Remember, a healthy relationship is made up of two independent people. So, here’s some key relationship advice: Don’t neglect your own growth and how it could potentially enhance your long-distance relationship.

#9 Stay connected

Send messages and stay connected with modern technology. Even though you’re in completely different time zones, simply sending a message at the start or end of the day will surely make your partner smile.

#10 Set clear rules and boundaries

Avoid doing anything you wouldn’t want the other person to see on social media. Within reason, stay out of situations that might make your partner feel uncomfortable or threatened. You may want to discuss rules that work for both of you before embarking on a long-distance relationship.

#11 Take care of yourself

Relationship advice won’t do you any good if you’re not at your physical or mental best. In order to maintain a healthy relationship with your partner, you’ll need to prioritise your health first, particularly with COVID-19 at large. Securing expat health insurance in Singapore would be your best bet. It will give you and your partner ready access to the best treatments at top hospitals worldwide.
