Once upon a time, there was a man who wanted to create a good latex mattress made from natural and sustainable products. He grew his company in a shophouse in Singapore, and in Bali and Hong Kong. But people wanted more, so the range grew into the dreamy bamboo sheets, bed frames, a range of latex pillows and bolsters, cushion, bath linen and essential oils – and everyone was happy ever after!
Many of our readers will be familiar with European Bedding – the brand sold their Heveya latex mattress and eventually the whole range of Heveya bamboo sheets and latex pillows for well over a decade. In 2020, they decided to change their name to Heveya – a brave move, but it makes sense. And that’s not all they’ve been doing over the last couple of years!
The Shop
The team recently finished renovating the two floors of their shophouse in Tiong Bahru. The ground floor showcases all the bamboo sheets, cushions, linen throws and latex pillows and bolsters – as well as the new range of bath towels and bathmats. In the upstairs sleep studio, you can take your time to try out a latex mattress and different styles of pillows to see what suits. You can listen to some chill music and have a cup of tea or coffee too. Friendly sleep consultants are there to guide you through the whole choosing process.
What to Buy
When it comes to Heveya’s mattresses, you can choose the best firmness level for you, and your partner can also choose their own preferred softness – both in one bed. A quick shout-out for their latex pillows too. Do try these! They come in different sizes and depths, and there are even pillows for babies. Both the latex mattress and pillows are anti-allergen and anti-dust mite. Because the pillows are rubber-based, you don’t have to fluff them up only for them to flatten again; they stay as you want them.
Heveya has introduced its own teak bed frames too, which are very cool and made from plantation wood in Bali. So the store really has become a one-stop shop for your bedroom. As for the bed bases, I fancy the automated ones. Can you imagine pressing a button that raises you up so you’re ready to read? It also has flexible slats in the base that follow your body shape. Sounds like entrapment to me!
Heveya & Sustainability
The brand is Belgian in origin, but the team sources the best products from around the world. This is because they only want to work with like-minded suppliers. Comfort and quality are their non-negotiables, together with sustainability.
As Heveya’s Branch Manager, Sarah Depoortere says, “We’ll work with suppliers anywhere in the world, provided they manage to balance these factors.” So, a company working on creating products with recycled plastic or putting waste-water solutions in place might be ideal for a collaboration. It’s all about finding the right company – one that works with its employees in the right way, and offers quality products that are the most sustainable and natural, wherever they might be in the world.
Heveya’s organic duvets and mattress protectors are from Germany, for instance, and their new vegan towels are from Portugal. “Our customers really value the fact that we only work with these sustainable partners,” adds Sarah. Heveya’s Belgian owner Stefan has been based in Asia for 25 years and now lives in Bali. He’s very committed to giving back, and has pledged to donate one percent of their sales revenue towards charitable and sustainable institutions, regardless of profit.
Working together with Replant and the indigenous Dayak people in Borneo, Heveya is aiming to plant 12,000 trees in areas of deforestation every year. These trees are not just good for the earth; they also provide valuable resources and jobs for these local communities, ultimately creating a sustainable ecosystem between nature and its people.
Sumba Hospitality Foundation (SHF) is another sustainability partner that Heveya works with. Every year, Heveya sponsors the local Sumbanese community to study in SHF, whose mission is to help the eastern Indonesian island of Sumba to grow as a sustainable tourism development, while involving the local people, protecting the environment and showcasing the natural beauty of the area.
