Whether facials are part of a monthly regime or a once-in-a-while indulgence for you, there’s no denying the effects of a good hydrating facial – clear, hydrated and glowy skin that’s free of congestion and gunk. If salon facials aren’t cutting it for you, why not consider treating yourself to a medical-grade, machine-based facial? I tried the proprietary Hydrafacial at Bio Aesthetic Medispa, which promises all of the above and more, without any downtime. Read on for my thoughts!
Upon entering Bio Aesthetic, I was instantly impressed by the chic and modern décor of the medispa. The concierge area displays skincare products and information on the clinic’s top treatments – great for browsing while waiting for registration. After completing a detailed first-timer form, I was ushered into the cosy waiting area featuring a plush lounger and the latest magazines to keep me occupied.
One of the signature treatments at Bio Aesthetic is the Hydrafacial. Also known as the Hydrapeel, the non-invasive, multi-action facial uses hydradermabrasion (an upgraded form of microdermabrasion) to exfoliate dead skin cells, remove excess sebum and deeply cleanse the skin, resulting in a clearer complexion with a radiant glow. According to the clinic’s website, you can see results from just one session. It’s also described as painless and comfortable, and takes up only an hour of your day, making it the perfect lunchtime facial for working professionals. On top of that, it’s suitable for multiple skin concerns, including dry and dehydrated skin, oily and congested skin, blackheads, and enlarged pores. I’d read nothing but positive reviews about the facial, so I was super stoked to experience it; my sensitive, acne-prone skin needed a fix, stat!
My aesthetician started the treatment with double cleansing to remove makeup and surface impurities on my face. She then applied a gentle salicylic acid peel on my skin as the first step to treat my breakouts and reduce inflammation. Next up came hydradermabrasion; this key step sets the Hydrafacial apart from regular salon treatments. Compared to microdermabrasion, which uses an abrasive diamond to “sand off” the surface layers of your skin, Hydrafacial is gentler and more suitable for those with sensitive skin as it uses a vacuum suction tip. The nifty device employs micro-absorption technology to remove stubborn impurities and unclog pores, while filling the skin cell membrane with vital nutrients like antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid. I can attest to its claim of being completely pain-free; the process was so comfortable that I found myself nodding off!
I opted for manual extraction to tackle my congested pores. However, you can skip this step if you prefer since the machine does a fair bit of removing the gunk. The session rounds up with a double mask to calm and soothe the skin. To speed up skin recovery and maximise the results, Bio Aesthetic recommends following up with a toning laser treatment right after the facial, which was what I did.
Immediately after, my face was slightly red from the extraction and laser, but the redness went away after a couple of hours. Over the course of the week, I noticed my skin becoming brighter and more even. To my relief, my breakouts were less frequent, too. It’s been a while since my skin felt this smooth and balanced – not dry and not overly oily. I’m a convert!
