Traditionally, the ‘summer’ months are a high-turnover time for expats leaving Singapore, and while this means you’ve sadly said goodbye-for-now to some of your dearest mates, the silver lining is that the range at auction house, Expat Auctions, will be bursting with variety and friendly on the wallet to boot.
Singapore’s first weekly live auction house was set up a decade ago to cater for transient expats leaving behind dining tables, chairs, beds and sofas. They’ve since expanded their range to include decorative items – lamps, statues, Asian artifacts and beautiful rugs – as well as antiques, artworks and excess stock from stores and show homes around Singapore.
Items usually sell for a whopping 70% below retail, plus you’ll have a great story to tell next time a guest admires that particular piece. Did we mention that it’s a unique and truly thrilling way to shop? Here’s how it works:
- A new collection is built every week with a catalogue of roughly 150 lots – published on Expat Auctions’ website every Thursday afternoon. So, take a look and see what takes your fancy.
- If you find something you simply must have (we’ll put money on the fact that you will), then visit the showroom – located on the West Coast just past Alexandra – which is open for viewing all day Friday to scope out/ fall even more in love with your chosen piece/s.
- The live auction takes place on Saturdays at 10am. If you didn’t make it to Friday’s viewing-session, get there around 9am on Saturday to have a quick look around. And if you can’t make it in person on Saturday, they accept absentee bidding and are currently upgrading their website to accept online bids. More info about the bidding process here.
Don’t be put off if you’re brand new to the whole auction process, their experienced and friendly staff are on hand to explain how the process works. Plus, resident auctioneer Shaun McEwan is knowledgeable and passionate about all things interior design, which always makes for a fun morning under the hammer!
Whether you’re looking to furnish a new abode from scratch or hoping to cherry-pick a few special items for a great price, make Saturday 6 August an auctioneering date. We’ll see you there!
PS. Are you relocating, downsizing or simply having a décor change of heart? Expat Auctions also serves clients wanting to sell furniture; and you can enjoy the use of your items right up until you move out. Don’t worry about transportation either, as they have an in-house transportation team to take care of that hassle too!
