Great shows to catch this April

26th July 2017 by Lindsay Yap 2 Min Read

https://expatliving.sg/great-shows-april/

Be treated to a spectacular line-up of shows this month, including Tony award-winning production La Cage Aux Folles and Grammy-winning band Santana. Read on for our top picks this April…

Hand To God Tyrone
Meet Tyrone, your worst nightmare

Preying Puppet

From 19 April, Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) presents Tony Award-nominated play Hand to God, a dark comedy that narrates the life of a troubled teen who, while coping with his father’s recent death, is forced to join his mother in a church-led puppet group. When this God-fearing boy discovers that his sock puppet has a life of its own, all hell breaks loose, with his foul-mouthed, satanic sock puppet, Tyrone, showing the children, minister and school bully who’s really in charge. Starring Daniel Jenkins, Janice Koh, Ann Lek, Thomas Pang and Gavin Yap, Hand to God plays to a younger generation, riffing on everything from love to faith while making audiences laugh out loud. Psst – if you’re a fan of Avenue Q, you’ll likely love this one!

See it at KC Arts Centre – Home of SRT. Tickets from Sistic. srt.com.sg

Santana
Groove along to Santana’s hit songs

Smooth Sounds

Multi-Grammy-winning band Santana, featuring iconic guitarist Carlos Santana, will perform at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre on 4 April, giving fans the chance to hear hit songs like “Maria Maria”, “Smooth”, “Black Magic Woman” and “The Game of Love” live. Famous for its signature fusion of rock, blues and Latin American music, Santana has sold more than 90 million records, making it one of the world’s best-selling groups of all time.

Tickets from Apactix.

La Cage Aux Folles
Enjoy this heartwarming story of family

All That Glitters

This month, Wild Rice brings Tony Award-winning musical comedy classic La Cage Aux Folles to the Victoria Theatre stage. Featuring the classic musical number “I Am What I Am”, the heartwarming story follows Albin – a family man by day, and Zaza, a glittering cabaret star by night – and his partner George, who run into a dilemma when their son brings home a girl with ultra-conservative parents. Raising themes of family, love and self-acceptance, the almost 35-year-old show (on which the 1996 hit film The Birdcage was based) is as relevant as ever, following one family’s struggle to stay together, stay fabulous and, above all else, stay true to themselves.

See it from 19 April to 13 May. Tickets from Sistic. lacage.sg

Coming Up

Village People
Dance and sing along to popular hits like YMCA and Can’t Stop The Music

Macho Men

Next month, the original 1970s disco icons Village People head to MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands to celebrate their 40th anniversary with two performances on 18 and 19 May. Originally formed in 1977, Village People were a phenomenon throughout the 70s and 80s with chart-topping hits like “San Francisco/In Hollywood”, “Macho Man”, “Y.M.C.A.”, “In the Navy”, “Go West” and “Can’t Stop the Music”. In addition to catchy dance tunes and energetic choreography, fans can expect the group’s six members to wear the famous costumes for which they’re known: cowboy, cop, construction worker, Native American, GI and biker. In addition, audiences can look forward to a special guest appearance by Bjorn Again!, the beloved ABBA cover-band show.
