Great films out in Singapore in May 2014: Maleficent, Draft Day, Godzilla among movies coming to town

Movie fans in Singapore! Get stuck into our pick of this month’s happenings on the big screen and the small screen.



Draft Day
This sports drama follows Sonny (Kevin Costner), the general manager of American NFL team, the Cleveland Browns, as he struggles to acquire the number one draft pick. This film also stars Jennifer Garner and Tom Welling. Opens 15 May at Cathay Cineplexes.



The king of all monsters gets a reboot this month in a modern-day retelling of the famous tale. Starring Alex Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston and Juliette Binoche, this adventure pits Godzilla against malevolent creatures that threaten the existence of mankind. Opens 15 May in digital and 3D.



After a disastrous blind date, single parents Lauren (Drew Barrymore) and Jim (Adam Sandler) agree to never see each other again. But when they sign up for the same African safari, they’re forced to share a suite during a weeklong family getaway. This romantic comedy is the third collaboration between Barrymore and Sandler – and sure to make for a good time. Opens 22 May.

Naomi Watts stars as former Hollywood star Grace Kelly struggling with her marriage and identity during a political dispute between Monaco’s Prince Rainier III and French president Charles de Gaulle in the 1960s. Opens 22 May at Golden Village cinemas.

This much-anticipated movie shares the untold story of the iconic villain from Disney’s 1959 classic, Sleeping Beauty, and reveals the events that hardened Maleficent’s heart – ultimately driving her to place a curse on Princess Aurora. This action-adventure, which stars Angelina Jolie in the title role, is one for the whole family to enjoy. Opens 29 May.

The Normal Heart
Set in New York City in the early 1980s, this HBO Original movie takes an unflinching look at America’s sexual politics during the onset of the HIV-AIDS crisis. Directed by Glee’s Emmy Award-winning director, Ryan Murphy, the drama stars Mark Ruffalo, Jim Parsons and Julia Roberts. Premieres 1 June at 10pm on HBO (StarHub TV Channel 601).

Kangaroo Dundee
This touching series follows tough ex-boxer Chris “Brolga” Barnes as he scours the Stuart Highway in Australia’s desolate red desert, in search of orphan joeys. Upon rescuing these roos, Brolga – an unexpected saviour – raises his brood in an Alice Springs sanctuary. Premieres 8 May at 10.50pm on BBC Knowledge (StarHub Channel 401).

Using cutting-edge cinematography, this documentary gets under the fur of man’s best friend, exploring everything from dogs’ super-power senses to their whole-hearted loyalty and their relationships with humans. Premieres 29 May at 10.50pm on BBC Knowledge (StarHub Channel 401).
