Want to get fit? Here’s five tried and tested gyms.

New year, new fitness routine? Check out these great gyms found across the island.

Aquaspin™

Otherwise known as aqua biking, this unique exercise is nothing like your regular gym session. A low impact workout good for rehab and for those looking for something that doesn’t involve the weights room, each 45-minute session involves water resistance training with an underwater bike.

Hear it from: Anthia Chng, Junior Editor

“Fitness wise, I would consider myself to be slightly above average. I’ve been involved in sports in the past (competitive table-tennis) and I exercise three times a week by hitting the gym and running. Aquaspin™ however, was uncharted territory to me. There were nine other ladies in the pool, mostly expats. The session incorporated short bursts of energy and rest intervals, making it effective for weight loss. It was alternating between a minute of fast-paced stand-up pedaling, followed by another minute of abs work while lying on the back, then a minute of break. Before I knew it, the 45 minutes were over! It definitely felt shorter than expected, particularly because of my trainer Edwin’s upbeat and engaging personality. Would I do it again? Definitely! While this was essentially a full body workout– my abs and thighs were sore the next day – it was way more fun than a regular gym visit.”

Body Temple

Located near Dempsey, Body Temple is a boutique personal training and nutrition studio exclusively for women. Their international team of trainers are specialised in pre and post-natal exercise, rehabilitation, weight loss and endurance training (for marathons, for example). Group classes for boxing and pilates are available, too.

Hear it from: Jude Tartkoy, British

“I’m a 48-year-old working mum with two young sons. Five months ago I started to feel uncomfortable about my body and how I looked in clothes. After just a couple of months with Body Temple I started to see and feel a difference. People around me also started to comment that I was looking good! The team helped me with diet advice and tailored my personal training to focus on specific areas like building up my core. After five months, I have lost 9kg and my visceral (abdominal) fat is now at a healthy level. I’m so thankful to have found Body Temple and their amazing team who have supported me through highs and lows. I’ve made a lifestyle change and there is no going back.”

F45

Hop onto the latest fitness craze at this gym, popular for its intense circuit training sessions. Each high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout is 45 mins long, combining cardio and strength circuits that are challenging, and fun. Interested? They’re also offering a two-week free trial, perfect to get a taster of the workout before you commit long-term.

Hear it from: Annette Smith, Dutch

“I’m so happy I made the decision 10 weeks ago, to give F45 a try. I was feeling pretty low at the time, but now the mental change was just as big as the physical change. It took hard work and dedication from my side, but I never could have done it without the motivation and spirit of the F45 team. They managed to create such a great atmosphere in that studio that I really felt at home there. I love belonging to a team with my fellow members. It’s nice to see familiar faces encouraging each other!”

Multiple locations island wide, including Novena and the newly opened branch at Holland Village.

UPFitness

Ultimate Performance (UP) Singapore

“If you’re looking for something more tailored, Ultimate Performance (UP) Singapore offers personal training packages for specific purposes like an upcoming wedding or fun run. Conveniently located in Raffles Place, the massive 6,000 sq feet space is the largest dedicated personal training gym in Asia.

Hear it from: David Round, British

“I was pretty fit as a teenager, before gaining weight in my 30’s, but now I genuinely think that I am the fittest I’ve ever been in my life. I’ve also learnt a lot about diet and exercise – knowledge that will last a lifetime. While I can’t compare to the UP trainers in terms of being an expert in the subject, to most people I’m pretty knowledgeable in the area. I get a lot of questions from friends and colleagues asking for advice when they see my results! I have made a lot of new friends at the gym and also broadened my social circle with all these new activities.”
