We love this very quirky photograph because it really makes viewers smile. This wild-spirited five-year-old came in with his family for a family portrait, and this image was shot in between outfit changes in the balcony of our heritage studio, in natural light.

Describe the work that went into perfecting the shot.

When shooting a young child, you have to be quick and ready to capture fleeting moments. We become kids ourselves to play with and engage with the children. Dan converted this photo to classic black-and-white during the post-processing stage to retain its classic, timeless mood.

We have photographed thousands of families, each so unique and special in its own way. We love working with little children because you never know what they’re up to!

Why is it a favourite?

Everything about it: the memory of photographing this brilliant little boy, his wild, carefree smile in the picture, that finger and the slight tilt that adds more charm to the whole magical image. To me, this photograph captures the beauty of a little boy’s childhood – his carefree mood and happiness! Plus, it reminds us to #justsmile every day!

THE STUDIO LOFT

It’s my younger son Dylan, asleep with his favourite sleeping buddy, Juju.

Describe the work that went into perfecting the shot.

I had to work with artificial lighting as it was shot at night, and turning on the ceiling light was out of the question. So, I brought my laptop near the bed, turned it on, and adjusted the brightness level to the maximum level. I also made sure the screen was displaying something relatively light in colour to prevent any colour cast. Although that didn’t matter as my final image was converted to black and white, but if you wish to keep the image in colour, then that is something to consider.

Why is it a favourite?

In recent years, I’ve been trying to capture moments of my children in their everyday life. This is one of my favourites as it captures him in deep sleep and relaxation – no funny poses or fake smiles, just an innocent little boy asleep with his teddy. I showed Dylan this photo and he smiled.

Is this image typical of the photographic work that you do?

As a family photographer, I capture photos of smiling (or screaming!) kids every day. This image is a rare opposite of the typical work I do. I quite like capturing moments of my sons like this and I’ve been making it a habit to take unscripted shots of them in everyday life. I include shots such as this in a photo book I make annually; these will be treasured memories for our family in years to come.
