Looking for family photographers in Singapore? These two studios have lots of experience working with kids and the photography skills to match! We talk to two professional photographers who tell us about their favourite recent photos. Some of Singapore’s photographers talk us through a recent family shot that they love.
“Bed of Roses” – Ashley Low Photography
This photo of baby Laurelyn was taken when she was 16 days old. The colours for the first shot are her mum’s favourite (from her wedding bouquet too): maroon and pink, with a hint of blue; mum also related to the concept of a bed of roses and requested it for the second shot.
To maintain variety and creativity within a client’s time in the studio, I always ask for their preferences of colour and props prior to a shoot. I also use creative compositions. In this example, I photographed the top picture of Laurelyn in the studio, while in the second image another shot of her is photoshopped on to a prebought background. A superbly creative photographer in Australia creates digital backgrounds that expand the limit of what we can do within the short time frame.
With a good eye and editing technique, I was able to change the baby’s wrap colour to blend in more to the background, and I adjusted the colour tones for the baby to blend into the tone of the roses.
Newborn photos are often in neutral, earthy tones and in a minimalist style, yet colours and flowers evoke emotions. I personally feel the vast indescribable feelings we have towards our babies can be represented better in colour. In this case, the photos evoke the sense of romance that Laurelyn’s parents have for each other. Colour can be found across my entire portfolio, from pregnancy and newborn shots, to babies up to a year old, and family portraits, be it in the studio or outdoors.
“In Good Hands” – Littleones Photography
This image was taken in our studio; it was our client’s first baby at one week old. We love that it compares the size of baby’s and mum’s hands – reminding us just how tiny they are at birth. The photo celebrates a mother who has carried her baby for nine months, and it shows her proudly holding up her newborn; these are the hands that will nurture and hold you forever! They are important hands!
Newborns are great to photograph as you can position them without disturbing them. In this case, we used our posing beanbag to make sure the baby was comfortable and safe. We have many years of experience in capturing shots like this and making sure the baby is warm and snuggled in a deep sleep. You can then position the baby and remove the blankets and create the shot.
We used Profoto lights and a full frame Canon 5 Mark III camera for the shot. We shoot in RAW so we can edit afterwards and retain all the detail and information. The only editing here was removing mum’s jewellery; we also darkened the black blanket and background to remove creases for an arty look. We used a professional black-and-white effect on the photo that mimics the old films we used to use for shoots and that we both love.
We are a sister team (Kate and Emily) and have been operating for 11 years now, and while we’re well known for working with newborns and children, we’re one of the leading senior portrait photographers in Singapore too! Most clients come back to us to have their family photos updated and that’s a good testimonial.
Sassy Sisters” – John Lim Photography
This image was taken in our studio, a conservation shophouse in the heart of Chinatown. This pair of cheeky and free-spirited twins were five at the time, and it was taken during their annual portrait session – it was a “stolen shot”; as we were getting the children to switch places they started running in circles around their bemused parents. What a moment!
With families, especially young children and pets, you need to be quick (15 years as a professional portrait and wedding photographer helps in that regard!) to capture moments like these; often they can’t be planned.
We love children and have three young children ourselves. We enjoy learning to understand and engage with young families when we’re photographing them. Deep down, we breathe monotone (black and white); that’s where the essence of the image is – a real and “uncamouflaged” portrayal.
This photo shows the genuine happiness of this family and the joy the children bring to the parents. It also captures their essence for this particular year. Children grow up so fast, their behaviour and moods change year after year, and we’re privileged to have preserved this memory for them. At our recommendation, the image made it onto the cover of the family’s annual album.
With children, “what you see is what you get”; their genuine endearing nature makes them so real and innocent – that’s what we like to convey in our photographs. We’ve been lucky enough to photograph people, including children, all around the world, and have won many awards for it too.
Circles of Love” – White Room Studio
This beautiful family wished to capture the essence of Singapore in the photos’ backdrops. They say laughter makes the best photograph, and we couldn’t agree more, especially in this lovely family portrait shot in our studio.
White Room Studio is set in a beautiful black-and-white Peranakan-style shophouse with a balcony that overlooks Fort Canning Park. It gives us a wide range of lighting and settings to shoot and play around with – especially when shooting in full natural light. This picture was shot in our Third Room gallery with pure natural light. We decided to do away with stagnant poses, which used to be the only possible way of capturing humans in photos in the past; luckily, technology has enabled us to fully embrace the shift towards more natural portraiture.
The picture was retouched in the signature style of White Room Studio. This was our favourite frame because we managed to capture expressions that were real and natural, creating an impact that is open, fun and real.
We specialise in a surprisingly wide range of photographic portraitures including family, maternity, newborn, glamour, graduation, pets and couples, including pre-wedding shoots. We’re also established in the local corporate photographic scene with more than nine years’ experience of handling all kinds of shoots for businesses.
