If you’re about to try eyelash extensions for the first time, here are some top tips from Fiona Koh, founder of lash salon The Lash Company, on making them last as long as possible.
Keep your lashes clean
Oil, makeup, product build-up and dead skin can affect lash retention and cause your pretty flutters to shed faster than they should. Wash them daily with a foamy facial cleanser or a lash cleanser. Gently massage around your eyes and give the lash line a gentle tap with a clean spoolie (mascara wand) before rinsing off with water. Blink onto a tissue to remove excess water before brushing them.
Choose the right products
Do not use any facial wipes, or oil- or cream-based cleansers. Avoid any cleansers that read “moisturising” or “moisture-rich” as they contain emollients that can coat the lashes and break down the adhesive faster than expected. For the same reason, do avoid having shampoos and conditioners run down your face.
Rubbing your eyes
Rubbing your eyes is a big no-no when you have eyelash extensions on. It can cause your natural lashes to break or prematurely fall out from its follicles, causing gaps along the lash line. Prolonged rubbing may also cause irreversible damage to the lash follicles.
Sleeping on your side is okay, but not flat on your face! If you like, you can choose silk pillow cases instead of cotton ones. They’re smoother and have less friction, thus lowering the chances of your extensions getting caught on your pillow case when you sleep.
Your lash health matters
We don’t recommend to clients that they put on more than their natural lashes can hold. Every client is different and we’re unable to say yes to someone who wants a dramatic, voluminous look when her lashes are thin and weak. Take some time to discuss any preferences and concerns you may have with your lash stylist. By looking at your eyes and natural lashes, we’ll be able to advise what is best suited for your particular face. Also, consider using a lash serum to maintain good lash health and keep your natural lashes strong.
