Many of us rely on false eyelashes or mascara to achieve thicker and longer lashes. Sadly, these temporary solutions only last a day at best. For longer results, try eyelash extensions, a popular alternative that promises to give you lashes (in lengths and thickness of your choice) that last for at least three weeks – with proper care. Editors Rebecca Bisset and Anthia Chng dropped by The Lash Icon in Tanjong Pagar to try out their services!
“The Lash Icon is located on the second floor of Orchid Hotel, a stone’s throw away from Tanjong Pagar MRT station. Its prime location makes it convenient for ladies working in the area to pop by during lunchtime for a touch-up. There are multiple styles available, from the most natural 1D Classic ($88) to dramatic, bolder options like the 6D Glamorous ($168) and Kim K Customised ($188). I wanted something visible yet natural-looking and lightweight, and so the 3D Fluffy ($138) was the perfect pick. Three ultra-soft lash strands are attached to each natural lash, which results in an airy, fluttery and voluminous look.
After choosing my preferred style, my lash artist started with the extensions. Thanks to her steady hands, the lash application process was pretty comfortable – I even managed a quick snooze! The only discomfort I had was having to rest my head on a small pillow (the salon uses ergonomic lash pillows imported from Estonia) and lay still for a good hour and a half, but the results after were totally worth it.
I’ve tried lash extensions a few times before and really loved the look, but often found them too heavy – like they’re weighing down on my natural lashes. The 3D Fluffy lashes turned out to be exactly the opposite: light and super comfortable. I’ve also received many compliments on my new flutters even though I’m putting in less effort into my daily makeup routine. And because now it looks like I have both eyeliner and mascara on, I can get by with using just two products: brow powder and concealer!” – Anthia Chng
“I liked the fact that The Lash Icon has a rather private location, and there are heaps of parking lots in the basement of the building (Orchid Hotel) on Tras Street. There are three beds in the room, but it was quiet during my appointment and I had no idea that other people had entered, which was nice. I’ve been to other salons where the therapists were constantly chatting loudly to each other. That wasn’t the case here; in fact I managed to sleep for most of it!
I got the 6D Glamorous ($168), which were a lot thicker and longer than I normally go for, and I was a bit overwhelmed at first. The application took longer than normal – nearly two hours in total, but the lashes lasted well. I got them removed after three weeks and they were still in decent condition. They probably would have lasted for a week longer, but sometimes you just need to be able to rub your eyes! I do love having eyelash extensions though, and the hassle of caring for them definitely makes up for not having to apply and deal with mascara.
Although I often have eyelash extensions on, this was the first time I’ve had strangers complimenting me on how they look. A young woman in a cool fashion place along King’s Road in London was just one of them. A word of advice: unless you’re used to more dramatic lash styles, opt for the 9mm length for everyday wear. Anything longer may work better if you’re dolling up for a special event.” – Rebecca Bisset
