Period problems -The bane of a woman’s existence. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) & Endometriosis with Dr Anupriya Agarwal
14 September @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
More than a third of women have issues with their periods, which not only affect their quality of life, but may also result in fertility problems if left untreated. Often, women are not aware of the impact and implications of these, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. To raise awareness about two common conditions – PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and endometriosis – we have asked one of Singapore’s leading gynaecologists to tell us about them, enabling us to understand and effectively seek help.PCOS is a common hormonal condition affecting 10 to 15 percent of all women. It can present not only with irregular menses and aesthetic problems in young girls, but also lead to long-term serious health problems like endometrial cancer, diabetes and heart disease later on in life. Irregular periods, acne, facial hair growth, weight gain and fertility problems can all be symptoms of the syndrome.Endometriosis impacts 20 to 25 percent of women of reproductive age. It commonly presents with painful and heavy periods though sometimes it may not give rise to any symptoms. It is singularly the most common condition that negatively impacts a woman’s quality of life and fertility. On average, women suffer for six to seven years before they get an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment of endometriosis.
Both these conditions can be genetically related.
This talk will help you understand the genetic basis of PCOS, its health implications as well as the treatment options at various ages, from teenage girls to women seeking fertility and those in the menopausal phase.
