National Theatre: War Horse
Enjoy a film screening of War Horse by the National Theatre this July. Based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel and adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford, the story brings you on a journey from the fields of Devon to the trenches of First World War France. Directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, it features life-size puppets by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company.
At the outbreak of World War I, Albert’s beloved horse Joey is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire where he goes on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey, so he embarks on a mission to bring his horse home.
As part of National Theatre Live, there’ll also be film screenings of Antony & Cleopatra on 27 July (starring Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo) and King Lear on 28 July (starring Ian McKellen).
