Tales of the Malay World: Manuscripts and Early Books
18 August, 2017 - 25 February, 2018
Come and be immersed in the world of Malay stories at the National Library Board’s latest exhibition, Tales of the Malay World: Manuscripts and Early Books. Showcasing the National Library’s extensive Singapore and Southeast Asian collection, Tales of the Malay World explores traditional Malay literature – from handwritten manuscripts to early lithographed books. The exhibit showcases over 150 items. This includes manuscripts on loan from the United Kingdom and Netherlands, shown in Singapore for the first time.
These rare items provide a glimpse into the society that produced and read these works. Discover the impact printing had on manuscript tradition, as well as Singapore’s place as an important printing hub in the late 19th century. Additionally, members of the public can sign up for film screenings, special lectures by international guest speakers and curator’s tours of the exhibition at library eKiosks or on the GoLibrary portal.
