Written by the award-winning writer Alfian Sa’at in collaboration with up-and-coming playwright Neo Hai Bin, Merdeka is a new play by Wild Rice examines how Singapore’s history and humanity have been shaped and shattered by forces of colonialism.
As the Singapore Bicentennial is celebrated, six young people form a group called Raffles Must Fall to examine Singapore’s colonial legacy. They look at forgotten texts and artefacts, re-enacting scenes from the past to better understand subjugation and the dream of self-determination.
