3 Day Iyengar Yoga Immersion with Diwan

Iyengar Yoga is named after and developed by B.K.S. Iyengar. It is a form of Hatha Yoga known for its use of props, such as wooden gadgets, belts and ropes to help practitioners achieve correct alignment and a deeper understanding of yoga postures. Through the practice of a system of asanas, Iyengar yoga aims to unite the body, mind and spirit to achieve overall strength, mobility and stability.
In this 3-day immersion, different aspects of Iyengar yoga will be covered, allowing one to dive deeper into this practice.

Day 1: 26 Oct, Fri, 1pm – 6pm
Covering the Fundamentals: Introduction to the 3 Pillars of Iyengar Yoga
Iyengar yoga is defined by 3 distinctive characteristic – Technicalities, Sequencing of asanas and pranayama, and the timing/duration of each pose. In this introduction session, we find out more about the importance of each aspect, and how it defines Iyengar Yoga when applied collectively in practice.
Day 2: 27 Oct, Sat, 10.30am – 6pm
Sun Salutations, Asanas, Prop Use
With a better understanding of Iyengar Yoga concepts, we experience the physical practice with B.K.S. Iyengar’s style of basics asanas, ranging from sitting poses, standing poses, inversions, forward and back bending poses, twisting poses, sun salutation, and relaxation. As a key characteristic of Iyengar Yoga, the proper and suitable use of props will also be covered in this session.
Day 3: 28 Oct, Sun, 10.30am – 6pm
Yoga therapy and Pranayama
Acknowledging the uniqueness of everyone’s body structure and body ailments, this session will be targeted at introducing specific body alignment and special asanas, pranayama to heal physical ailments. Such modifications can be included in daily practices to aid and heal those who require special treatments for injuries and physical pains.
Suitable for all levels, this immersion will be helpful to practitioners who are keen to explore the concepts and ideas behind Iyengar Yoga, as well as practitioners who are working with injuries/ailments.
About the Instructor
Diwan Singh Bisht was born in the picturesque hill town of Almora in 1976. At aged 24, he discovered yoga. His first teacher was one of B.K.S. Iyengar’s foremost and senior students, Br Rudradev Gowda. Diwan spent 4 years at Br Rudra’s Yoga Study Centre in Rishikesh, where he studied and learned the basic foundation of Iyengar Yoga while regularly attending the general classes, intensive courses and yoga therapy classes. Br. Rudradev Yogacharya’s, teachings and asthetic way of life turned Diwan towards spirituality, introspection and meditation. Later, he enhanced his knowledge of correcting and assisting yoga students working with Sharat Arora of Dharamshala; Italy’s Maria Paola, and Ushadevi of the internationally-acclaimed Omkarananda yoga studio in Rishikesh.
For the past seven years Diwan has studied regularly at the Ramani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Poona, under the guidance of Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar from whom he received his certificate as an Iyengar certified yoga teacher.
Diwan taught yoga asana in Italy for three years until 2007, and has since then regularly conducted classes in India and China. A committed practitioner of Vipassana meditation, Diwan uses its precepts to give his practice and teaching a meditative and introspective approach. Teaching for him is a way of life and he sees it as way of sharing knowledge in an environment where both teacher and student work to perfect their asana practice.
