Don’t want to ship your furniture with you? Try furniture rental instead

Updated on 29th September 2016 by Emily Finch |

So, you’ve said yes to that overseas posting to Singapore and you’ve scoured our site for the deets on everything from schools, to where to live, you’ve even debated the condo vs house thing. But, it might not have occurred to you that there’s an option out there which can remove one more stress from the whole moving ordeal. That is – renting furniture when you get here. This is an especially good option for those who think their stint overseas will be short-lived. We’ve rounded up a few options to make one decision that little bit easier.

We’ve swooned over the stunning pieces at Gallery 278 many-a-time but these guys have a furniture leasing arm, Esco Leasing, too, yay! Established back in 1989, eco-conscious design and lifestyle trends remain the focus here.

Esco Leasing is a vendor-independent leasing company: that means, you may include items from Ikea children furniture, King Living storage sofas, Courts home appliances or Sofzsleep mattresses to your lease program. How’s that for choice?

They specialise in customisation of furniture, so you get to hand-pick everything from the size, design and colour shades. And, if you’ve fallen in love with a piece during its time in your home, there’s a buy-out scheme at the end too. This tailored inventory is written under Residual Lease. These guys are also certified partners with the prestigious CORT Global.

Esco Leasing Pte Ltd offer both Residual Lease (lease-to-own) and Pure Lease (rental without ownership) programmes. They also write a combination lease, that is, some inventory in Residual Lease and some in Pure Lease; really it’s the best of both worlds.

Another well-established outfit, the team at Lian Huat offer the full-service rental treatment. Once you’ve had a gander around their showroom (a whopping 13,000 sq ft four-storey building!), and chosen your coveted pieces, they ensure the furniture is delivered and installed. There’s also the added bonus of a furniture maintenance package too. Here, the focus on is on convenience and Lian Huat provides added extras from resizing furniture to maintenance of electrical appliances.

Manager, Shuhui Ng explains: “We aim to provide clients with a fuss-free furnishing experience because we understand that relocating to a new place can be stressful and time-consuming.”

Lian Huat’s own in-house production team gives clients the option of customising products and they also have an e-commerce arm which enables an almost instant confirmation on rental periods of 1-6 months.

Fix an appointment with their Leasing Consultants, mention “Rent with Expat Living” and receive a free gift when you sign up for a minimum of 1 month’s rental.

Valid till 31 Dec 2016.

where to rent furniture in Singapore

Avid EL readers will know Window To the Past and its stunning ranges, but did you know some of them are available to rent?

WTP’s flexible furniture leasing packages, offer short or long-term contracts from just one month to 36 months: perfect for those not knowing how long they are going to be here. This renowned operation (they’ve been bringing furniture to customers in Singapore for over 25 years now) also gives you the option to own the furniture at a nominal cost at the end of the lease period. Bespoke and super-flexible furniture leasing options galore.

EL spoke to Mimi Somjee, WTP’s founder: “Established since 1992, WTP offers flexible leasing options, with a wide range of budgets that caters to both long-term and short-term leases. We offer design consulting services, complimentary to our leasing clients, that allow for clients to customise their pieces. Our service also includes making up the beds and laying the linen so that clients can walk in with just their suitcase. Moving is a very hectic and traumatic experience, we do hope we can assist in making the transition as seamless and hassle free as possible. We are confident that we stand out among other vendors in the industry based on price, service, range, ability and capability.”

About Emily Finch

Always on the hunt for her next resto review, Emi has spent the last four years at EL munching and drinking her way around the island. Not one to turn down a free-flow opportunity, a personal highlight has been attending a super-brunch (yes, they exist!), and she now spends most evenings "power walking" it all off! Her active daughters and highly strung woofer keep her busy when she's not chained to her laptop managing digital content.
