We’ve all seen a person – perhaps even someone we know – whose face looks unnaturally young for their age, or come across those post-surgery images on the internet that look overly artificial. More often than not, the results of undergoing a SMAS facelift – the most commonly performed facelift on the market – may not be the most flawless. We speak to the team at Regen Plastic Surgery Korea for an alternative route to getting an undetectable lift – namely a deep plane facelift – so you can beat saggy skin without looking like you’ve undergone plastic surgery.
The problem with SMAS facelifts
The SMAS facelift concentrates on the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), also known as the underlying layer of facial muscles adjacent to the platysma muscle in the neck. While a lift in the area can help to improve sagginess in the lower face and neck, the team at Regen say the procedure can result in an overly “tight” look since only the skin is separated from the deeper muscles and soft tissue. Another downside is that the SMAS lift only treats the lower one-third of the face and neck area, which can look artificial.
The solution
An effective alternative to looking naturally younger, the deep plane lift is more advanced and powerful than the SMAS facelift, according to the Regen team. Compared to the SMAS lift, it involves moving the skin from much deeper within, which often requires much more experience and skills from the surgeon. Targeting noticeable signs of ageing especially around the cheeks and jawline, the deep plane lift is usually performed through incisions. As there are many nerve endings in the area, the surgery risks are higher if you’re in the hands of an inexperienced surgeon, which is why the deep plane lift is not offered by every plastic surgeon. But, when executed properly by a highly skilled and experienced surgeon, the results can be amazing.
Where to go
If you’re thinking of going under the knife for this procedure, then why not get the work done in South Korea, the plastic surgery capital of the world? (There are direct flights daily from Singapore.) One experienced surgeon is Dr Myung Jung Oh from Regen Plastic Surgery in Seoul, who has completed hundreds of deep plane lift surgeries on both Korean and international patients.
