While Eugene transformed their new home into a sanctuary, he became the Fergusons’ trusted advisor and friend.

“We initially contacted Eugene because he was recommended to us. Having seen the space in its raw state, we felt that it needed someone with a serious ‘eye’ to really capitalise on its potential.

“With his attention to detail, personal involvement and flexibility, following-through and follow-up, from the first time we met Eugene set us at ease. He has an innate ability to connect, to visualise, and most of all, to listen to what one wants. His understanding was really reassuring and when combined with his aesthetic instincts, the initial results were encouraging to say the least.

“From dealing with various layouts and our crazy ideas, to soliciting bids from contractors, picking materials, shopping for home ware and choosing colour palettes, Eugene was more than a service provider. He was a trusted advisor and a friend.”

Instead of starting from scratch, Bruce and Cai Li liked Wendy Smith’s idea of using items they already owned.

“We decided to redo the apartment when we moved in, because we wanted it to look and feel like home. After an initial consultation, we chose designer Wendy Smith for the primary reason that she wanted to work around our collection of painting and statues, and also because she was not confined to using only one store. I had seen some of her work, and we liked her style.

“She gave us a lot of options to consider – after we told her what we wanted. She does a fantastic job of taking your pieces and arranging them in the space you have to make them fit in and look like they were bought for that space. She has a very easy-going personality.

“We love the way our place looks now. All rooms but the kitchen were decorated in some way. We like to have people over for dinner, so we have a dinner table made out of one piece of wood that seats 10.”

After the family sofa was ruined by their new kitten, René decided to redo the whole lounge and dining area to better fit with the rest of the home.

“I found Bambu Interiors at the Expat Living event held in Hort Park in September last year; they were friendly, approachable and had great ideas. During the whole interior design process, we felt that we had a say in the changes and were not being forced to accept anything we did not want. Daniele had a lot of patience when I changed my mind about some of the furniture.

“Thanks to them, the ‘wow factor’ as you walk into the house always receives numerous compliments: our console table with Chinese stools and the floral arrangements by Peter Rose create a great first impression. As a South African, my favourite thing is the dining room chairs in zebra print, and I like the Chinese side-board in the dining room.

“We also love the enormous daybed we brought with us from Hong Kong. It sits in the lounge area, which has been given a real contemporary feel with its new colour scheme.”
