Craft beer in Singapore: We review Amber Nectar beer bar in Robertson Quay

There are some nights when the cravings hit- you need a pint or two (or five) of freshly tapped, quality draft beer and a good ol’ bottle of your regular booze just wouldn’t cut it- tell us we’re not alone in this! Thankfully, there are a few trusty places to turn to when such hankering occurs, and beer haven Amber Nectar is one of them.

First impressions

A cosy yet chic hangout spot at Robertson Walk, Amber Nectar sets the stage for a perfect night out with the girlfriends, with its dim lighting and tall bar stools. The first thing we noticed is the loud graffiti wall, a new addition that instantly injects character and life to the space.

Known for its wide range of 20 unique styles of beer mainly from Germany, the two-year-old bar impresses with its drinks menu. From the refreshing Belgium Lambic Fruit Beers like the Kriek ($16 for 375ml) to heartier German options such as the Hofbrӓu Dunkel ($15 a pint), we were well spoilt for choice. If beer isn’t your thing, the bar also offers a decent selection of non-alcoholic drinks, as well as cocktails, martinis and shooters; there’s surely something for everyone here.

What’s new:

Newly launched at Amber Nectar is the beer growler ($36-$48), a takeaway glass bottle that contains a whopping 1.89 litres (or four pints) of brew. This special bottle uses brown glass to keep out UV rays, thus ensuring that your beer remains as fresh as possible. As a sealed growler can be kept in the fridge for up to seven days, it’s the perfect party drink option for your next gathering or housewarming party. What’s more, you’ll get a cheaper price if you return for a refill (a new bottle is given), so why not?

Gulp this down:

Don’t leave without trying the Aecht Schelnkerla Rauchbier – Mӓrzen ($17 a pint), a dark smoked beer with a strong bacon aftertaste. A unique brew that will leave you wanting more, this German specialty gets its distinctive flavour during the process of smoking malt with beechwood.

Chow on this:

Beer aside, highlights on the food menu are the Schweinshaxe Pork Knuckle ($25 for half, $35 for full) and homemade Amber Gourmet Burger ($18). Other bar grub include the hugely addictive Spam Fries ($10) and the ever popular Truffle Fries ($10), alongside classics like Fish & Chips ($15) and Sausage Platter ($22).

The Cheapskate:

From 5pm to 8pm daily, the Hofbrӓu Original, Hofbräu Dunkel and Hofbräu Münchner Weisse  – Hefe Weizen will go at $5++ per half pint and $8 per pint. Bottoms up!

You can get your growler fix at four other locations: Joo Bar, Salute Casual Dining, The Tiong Bahru Club and The Namly Club.
