Last week we covered Bukit Timah’s cute local shops and now it’s time to highlight the trendy, colourful area of Kampong Glam. We’ve got skinny on some of the best retail therapy on the island, courtesy of new online shopping community, Travelshopa.
In Malay, a kampung is village or settlement, while glam derives from the name of a particular tree that grew in abundance in the area in early Singapore.
These days, though, the shops are outnumbering the trees. Indeed, over the past few years, Kampong Glam has received much restoration, refurbishment and new life. The area is adorned with colour and hole-in-the-wall outlets. And the streets offer trendy shopping spots attracting a vast array of bazaar-style shops as well as more up-market local designers and retail entrepreneurs.
The shops along North Bridge Road, Haji Lane, Arab Street, Baghdad Street, Kandahar Street and Bussorah Street have created a happening vibe with a sense of a very friendly community, where store owners and shop managers greet shoppers and support each other like a small community should.
Opening times vary from store to store but it’s best to head down there after midday (12pm). Stores are open till late (between 8pm and 10pm for most). There is lots of street coupon parking, or alternatively the nearest MRT isBugis.
Among the many street-fashion and lifestyle boutiques is Gaia, with a full range of furniture in a variety of natural materials including tamarind wood, suar wood, teak root and teak. While you’re there, you’ll find their gorgeous accessories and lamps are hard to pass by, too. (780 North Bridge Road | gaialiving.com.sg)
