At its heart, Chingay is an entertainment programme to celebrate the Chinese New Year each year; but it’s also a multicultural showcase of local grassroots talents from all over the country and the world too. Now in its 50th year, here are five ways to be a part of this quintessential annual highlight of Singapore.
1. Spot the foreign contingent!
Since 1987, Chingay has welcomed foreign acts to be part of the show. In fact, there’s a Japanese performing group in each year’s parade for Chinese New Year. Past acts have come from Indonesia, Korea, Philippines, Russia, Republic of Rwanda, Thailand and many other countries.
2. Discover #OurChingay50Stories
The story and journey of Chingay will unfold through the eyes of the people involved in it. The performers, volunteers, crew members and community partners have contributed their parade memories and experiences through 50 stories anchored on the Chingay50 theme, Ignite Our Dreams. #OurChingay50Stories can be viewed on the Chingay website.
3. Watch #OurChingay50 live
Chingay50 will be a digital show that will be streamed live on Facebook, TikTok and the Chingay website. Tune in at 8pm on 12 February as the performances are broadcast from Jewel Changi. Already have plans for Saturday? You can always watch it again on the respective channels or catch the delayed telecast on 27 February and 6 March.
4. Take a snap of the #HeyChingay50Bus
There will be 20 public buses will be wrapped inside and outside in Chingay themed designs inspired by Chingay parades over the last five decades. The buses will be plying routes islandwide. When you see one, take a snap of the bus, post it to social media and use #HeyChingay50Bus, #ChingaySG2022 and #OurChingay50 for a chance to win prizes.
5. Shop Chingay merchandise
Add to the Chinese New Year festivities with limited-edition Chingay merchandise illustrated by talented local designers. Other merchants available at the Chingay Mama Shop on Lazada are a collection of local designers and social enterprises. The products available have a local flavour and they’re designed or made in Singapore. Part of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to a charitable cause.
