It’s time for a good family portrait

23rd September 2019 by Expat Living 4 Min Read

Looking for a good family portrait?  We know how difficult it can be to get a photograph where everyone’s looking good, so hand it over to the experts at these photography studios in Singapore. We talk to two professional photographer who tell us about their favourite recent family portrait shoots.

Littleones Photography

Kate & Emily

This was taken in the home of a mum of three. They’ve had their photos taken with us a couple of times, previously doing a newborn shoot at home where they loved the natural daylight look. So, they decided to do a “mummy and daughter” shoot this time. Children are more natural in their home environment, meaning you can capture endless natural and candid moments of families and children, like this one.

I love it because of the soft, even light and the moment that is captured – it’s so real and organic. I only had to get my client to sit on the floor – I knew the children would follow quickly! This photograph captures those moments as a mum where you constantly have your little ones attached to you. Beyond that, it shows the love between a mother and her children. We used daytime curtains to soften the natural light coming in through the windows and started capturing photos of them sitting and playing by the window.

Fave spots for shoots:

We do a lot of photoshoots at our clients’ homes, as well as iconic Singapore locations such as Gardens by the Bay, Duxton Hill, the Botanic Gardens and Emerald Hill; they’re popular as a reminder of time spent in Singapore.

My favourite photo of the year is of Stuart, Kim, Alex and Sarah; this gorgeous family was such a joy to shoot! Kim wanted a photoshoot at their house in Singapore – they’ve been living here for over 15 years. We decided to shoot a typical day spent in their home as a family. The blackand-white house was bathed in light, the parents were easy-going and the children were eager and excited to show us their pets and the surrounds. Alex couldn’t wait to show off her pet guinea pigs, and Sarah brought us to her favourite tree in the backyard that she and Alex love to climb.

The studio Loft

The photo was taken in natural light, with basic adjustment of colours and contrast made using Lightroom. We love going to our clients’ homes and capturing family moments as they are. There is a certain relaxed vibe when they are in familiar surroundings and with the people they love.

Fave spots for shoots: After a few shoots in the studio, our clients typically move on to outdoor sessions. Depending on the family, they’ll choose either a scenic spot, an architectural location or a place they love to spend time as a family. We often suggest a session in their homes, especially for expats, as these provide fond memories of their time spent here in Singapore. Other photos from the series can be found at thestudioloft.com.sg/at-home-with.

Marina Barrage was the first place that came to my mind when the Robinson family, who are relocating and leaving the country, requested for photographs of the family to be shot at one of Singapore’s iconic locations. Its expansive lawn, with Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay as the backdrop, makes it the perfect spot. I love the natural smiles from both puppy and daughter, with the beautiful skyline of Singapore – there’s nothing not to love.

Robinsons

For this photo, a wide aperture was used to create a blurred dreamy bokeh effect in the background to allow the subject to stand out more. A warm black-and-white tone was applied during post-processing to give the photo a classic look.

Fave spots for shoots: The Botanic Gardens and Fort Canning Park are highly requested because of their rich history and the greenery that provides shade and ample ideal photography spots. Shoots in our heritage studio are sought after as well; it has tall glass windows and a balcony that overlooks Fort Canning Park.

This year we say farewell to one of Singapore’s iconic structures, with the Sentosa Merlion ceasing operations in late October. Here are some facts and figures about the huge sculpture. 25 - It's age; the Merlion was built in 1995, designed and sculpted by Australian artist James Martin. 37 - Metres in Height. The huge structure included two observation decks – one at the mouth and one at the top of the head. 320 - Scales on the Merlion, each shaped like an octagon, or the Taoist bagua symbol. 4 - The number of teeth, thought to represent Singapore’s four ethnic groups – Malay, Chinese, Indian and Eurasia. 6 - Remaining number of Merlions in Singapore (including a pair of 3m Merlion statues on Mount Faber, along with the famous 8.6m original statue at Merlion Park). 90 - Cost, in millions of dollars, of the new “Sentosa Sensoryscape” project that will take over the Merlion’s spot, including a linkway between Resorts World Sentosa and the beaches to the south.

Melinda heads to a wet market! (Full video on IGTV Or YouTube) Did you know: The term “wet markets” came into common usage in the early 1970s when the Singapore government used the term to distinguish these markets from air-conditioned “supermarkets” that had become popular with the opening of Fitzpatrick’s supermarket in Orchard Road in 1958.
