There’s a rising trend in consumers seeking natural and organic ingredients in their beauty products and treatments, as these gentler formulas are often suitable for those with sensitive skin. Beauty editor Anthia Chng test-drives organic facials from three popular salons.
For the ultimate skin detox – Pure Tincture
Known for its bespoke organic facials for sensitive skin, this cosy salon offers the PAI Skin Confidence Detox & Decongest Facial ($180; 90 minutes), a gentle yet powerful treatment that reduces congestion and restores radiance.
Over the past couple of months, my skin had become more sensitive than usual and I was breaking out rather frequently. This facial came at just the right time; I needed something that was potent enough to clear my clogged pores, yet gentle enough for my sensitive skin.
After cleansing came exfoliation, where my therapist applied the Pai Kukui & Jojoba Bead Skin Brightening Exfoliator to get rid of dead skin and soothe any inflammation. As expected, the extraction process was painful, but it was also completely bearable. I was then treated to an indulgent face massage and a purifying mask from PAI, which draws out impurities without stripping the skin of its moisture. 90 minutes later, I left the salon completely refreshed and rejuvenated. My skin looked clearer and all the blackheads were gone, without extraction marks!
If you like the effects of your facial, be sure to check out the various products on display, which are mainly organic, natural and non-comedogenic. You can also snare a massive 30 percent discount on the facials when you sign up for a package!
For a midweek treat – Flare Wellness
Seven years ago, Sharifah Fazzeleen began to offer organic facials in the comfort of her home. Today, the friendly founder of Flare Wellness still carries out every treatment on her own, but now in a boutique space in Bugis. Visiting her homey salon is like popping by a friend’s house, and you’re still sure of a warm welcome, comfort and good service.
My pick was the Florens Illuminating Facial ($150; 60 minutes), which uses luxury Italian skincare line Florens Cosmetics. All facials offered at Flare Wellness start with a relaxing foot scrub to calm down the senses. Then the actual fun begins: cleanse, scrub, tone, two types of masks, as well as a heavenly lymphatic face massage. My treatment ended with a luxurious anti-ageing black caviar cream for ultimate hydration. Sharifah explains that the products are able to draw out impurities and clear clogged pores, so there’s no extraction involved – a relief for anyone who’s afraid of pain!
Honestly, I’m a bit sceptical about no-extraction facials, so I was pleasantly surprised when I looked into the mirror right afterwards. The blackheads around my nose area were less evident, thanks to the purifying and detoxifying mask, plus my skin looked more glowing, tighter and, yes, clearer!
For a quick fix – Sugar K Organic
Peel Bar Homegrown beauty bar Sugar K Organic Peel Bar offers just one service – its signature organic sugar peel ($65; 15 minutes). Created to give time-pressed individuals like me a quick, fuss-free facial, the concept is a godsend to so many of us who are always on the go.
After makeup removal, a thin layer of the sugar peel is applied to your bare face and left on for two minutes. This unique peel is described as a secret concoction of powerful botanicals and sugar cane (the star ingredient) for exfoliation purposes.
Unlike many of the chemical peels done in aesthetic clinics, this organic formula uses only natural ingredients, making it much gentler on the skin. A light, tingling sensation is normal, though I didn’t feel a thing. After that, my therapist wiped off the peel and tapped on a hydrating serum from the in-house line Kew Organics, which is also sold at the salon.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating; I left with my skin looking a little brighter and without any redness. I even ditched my usual concealer, for once! Best of all, because the peel is so gentle you can have it done weekly.
