The annual Best of British (BoB) festival at The British Club returns this year from April to November. From exclusive dinners to a Royal Wedding Street Party, there are all kinds of treats in store for expats in Singapore! Andrew Christon, the Club’s new GM, tells us more.
What are you expecting from your first Best of British celebration as general manager of The British Club?
Our previous GM Sean Boyle started this initiative about six years ago and it has been getting bigger and better each year. All of the events have in the past been packed into a few weeks in June each year. This year, based on much feedback from members and staff, we’ve decided to spread the events out over the year, from April to November, with at least one special Best of British event each month. June will remain the busiest month with the visiting UK Celebrity Chef events.
What are some of the “best” things that will be showcased?
In May, we will be organising our Royal Wedding event. We’re planning a traditional “street party”, similar to the ones we have in the UK. It will be held at The Elizabeth Suite, with the wedding being screened live on three giant screens. The event will kick off at 5.30pm on 19 May, with the ceremony proceedings beginning at 7pm Singapore time. Expect traditional British finger food, fun and games. After all the excitement, guests can retire to Windsor Arms where we will also be televising the FA Cup Final live! There’ll also be a Great British Bake Off where guests can bake their version of a wedding cake and be in the running for one of the top three spots!
In June, we welcome English celebrity chef Lesley Waters who is well known in the UK for her cookery books and television appearances on Ready Steady Cook and This Morning. Lesley will be cooking at our Commonwealth Wine Gala Dinner on 8 June and a Cooking Demo and Lunch on 10 June. We’ll also be organising a Bingo Night event in July (tentatively 7 July) as well as the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at the Singapore Turf Club on 21 October.
We’re continuing to work on putting everything together, and the subsequent events will be revealed in due course. In the meantime, I hope to see everyone in the coming months!
Aside from being loads of fun, Best of British also supports worthy causes; can you tell us a bit about those?
Last year’s events raised $65,000 for Gurkha Welfare Trust and Riding for the Disabled Association Singapore, and we’re delighted to be supporting both of these charities again this year.
