Chez Vous: HideAway
“After a few years as a brunette, I was feeling uninspired by my cut and colour and went to Shawn at Chez Vous: HideAway to help me return to my “natural blond” state. Born blond, I feel more myself with brighter tones. Shawn expertly guided me through the process of choosing natural tones that would brighten my hair colour, while avoiding brassiness. He’s so confident working with Caucasian hair and seemed to intuitively know what I wanted (and didn’t want).
The concept salon is an incredible, relaxing spa-like retreat in Ngee Ann City – hidden away and secluded – and you’ll feel like a celebrity going there. From the range of drinks available to the beautiful décor and relaxing music, it’s luxury and relaxation from start to finish. I love the haircut, which frames my face well, and the colour of my highlights is just what I wanted. I feel like “me” again, but an upgraded version!” – Katie Peace, reader
Psst… This hidden gem offers a wide range of hair services and complimentary spa-like features like massage chairs equipped with an oxygen bar and a scalp rejuvenation laser machine. Prices are tier-based and good value – it starts from $199 for one chemical service and a haircut, regardless of hair length. For Caucasian highlights (a premium service), a top up of $99 is required.
“The service at Trimmings’ spacious Dempsey salon is always consistent and professional, plus the spa-like setting makes for an amazing experience every time. You’re greeted with an uplifting lemongrass scent upon entering, which sets the mood for a relaxing session, whether you’re getting a hair makeover or a quick mani.
My hairstylist Melissa is an experienced hair and makeup artist who used to do lots of bridal looks, so she’s the perfect person to go to as I’m getting married next month! I showed her a few photos of my preferred colour and we decided on a natural balayage look: light honey highlights on dark brown hair. This style would look great as a halfup, half-down hairdo, which was what I had in mind for the big day.
As my hair is naturally dark, it has to go through a round of bleaching for the highlights to appear. Melissa assured me that she’d include an Olaplex treatment to nourish and smoothen my damaged strands. She was gentle, affable and detailed when answering my questions.
Three hours later – full head highlights, Olaplex treatment, haircut – I’m treated to a hot towel wrap and quick shoulder massage using peppermint oil from Aveda’s spa range – my favourite part! Melissa gave me soft and bouncy curls to show off the highlights, and advised me to use a purple shampoo twice a week to prevent brassiness. She recommended the Aveda Blue Malva, a plant-based shampoo for blonde and ashy tones.
I love my new hairstyle. When I return for a touch-up in two months, I know I’ll be in good hands!” – Anthia Chng
“This salon is open and friendly, looking down into the centre of Tanglin Mall. Paul Ashton is a chirpy Liverpudlian who has many years of experience at Toni & Guy in the UK, has worked in Hong Kong, and is a recent arrival in Singapore.
My hair has “exploded”, as we described it, from over-processing and colouring. Breakages start from around two inches from my scalp after the healthier, darker hair, and disappear into straggly brassy blonde ends.
After a strong (but non-judgmental) discussion about the dangers of bleach and the importance of conditioning treatments, dry hair shampoo and a good stylist, Paul got to work. Adding mid-lights and low-lights helped to pull the colour together. The low-lights were applied after all the other foils were done to control how dark they turned out.
After a light wash and toner, followed by an Olaplex conditioning treatment and a good trimming of the ends, my hair is blessed with a smooth, even finish that I’d been missing for a while. The haircut snipped off a few inches shorter than my normal style, but I like it and am very pleased with Paul’s obvious experience.
I am instructed to do twice weekly conditioning treatments, wash less often and steer clear of over-bleaching!” – Danielle Rossetti
PHS Hairscience Lab
“My hair is dry, naturally wavy and tends to turn rather unruly the moment it meets the slightest onset of moisture. Frizz has always been my biggest concern here in Singapore. I can’t help but resort to heat-styling ever so often in an attempt to control it. That, together with quarterly highlights, keeps causing stress to my tresses!
I was excited to give the proprietary Miracle Oil Treatment a try as all the ingredients are fully natural. The PHS Hairscience Lab at Wheelock Place is spacious and bright. First-timers get a thorough analysis of their scalp and hair condition via a microscopic device that is placed on the scalp. Thankfully, my hair follicles are found to be thriving, even though my scalp is apparently rather dry.
The oil-based treatment was developed by trichologists to revitalise dry, lacklustre hair thirsty for a boost. The treatment steps involve a thorough shampoo, after which the hair is sectioned off to allow an even distribution of the oil blend.
A 20-minute steam follows to activate the ingredients and seal in the goodness. After a final rinse, argan oil is applied to the hair. A blowout is the final step.
My locks look shinier after the regimen. I can confidently say that this treatment ticked all the right boxes and left my hair super smooth and moisturised. All I have to do is remind myself to book the next session in a month’s time to maintain the condition. My hair will surely thank me for it!” – Karin Galley
Leekaja Beauty Salon
“A little over six months ago, I sent my hair to proverbial rehab. Years of bleach had caused irreparable damage, so I decided to cut it short and go back to my natural colour; a practical decision that meant I could avoid the necessity of chemical touch-ups, toners, hair dryers and straighteners. The chemical hiatus did wonders in bringing back the strength to my locks, but admittedly the single-tone colour and heavy Singapore humidity left my mop looking a little lacklustre; it was time to get back into the hot seat!
For answers, I turned to Leekaja, a worldfamous Korean salon with more than 200 salons around the globe. Testament to their bid for perfection, not only does every member of staff here seem to rock perfect hair, but these same tall standards run through every level of the business, including tasteful and novel interiors, and a fully-stocked café serving complimentary barista coffee and freshly baked pastries and fruit.
To achieve the boost I was looking for without undoing any progress I had made, my stylist Jun suggested gentle highlights and the Cinderella Treatment, an organic alternative to chemical treatments that coats the hair in a nourishing and protective layer without compromising volume.
The process began with the application of ultra-fine Shiseido highlights, followed by an intensive, deep-cleansing shampoo to strip the hair of residue. The treatment is applied and meticulously ironed in. After my hair was washed, Jun dried it without a brush, just his hand effortlessly gliding through to reveal frizzfree, shiny locks with a touch of colour and dimension.
Weeks later, avoiding the hair dryer is easier than ever. I’m able to let my hair dry naturally and frizz-free. Best part is, if I continue with the right aftercare products, I’m told these effects can last for at least three months.” – Leanda Rathmell
