“Dominic, the owner of Visage, has been in the business for almost 30 years and is well known as an expert in styling Caucasian hair. He recommends the Brazilian Blowout (priced from $450), a hair-smoothing treatment that temporarily coats the outer layer of the hair to remove frizz, enhance shine and reduce blow-drying time. As a victim of ‘the Singapore frizz’, this was music to my ears! It’s suitable for all hair types but works especially well on thick, curly hair.
As I had recently had highlights done, I was worried about the potential effects the treatment might have on the condition and colour of my hair. However, Dominic reassured me that it would improve my hair texture and also bring out the colour tones. (He recommends that the treatment be done after a colour and cut.)
The hair is first washed with a deep-cleansing shampoo. Lotion is then applied to the hair, section by section, and combed through to ensure that it’s distributed evenly. Next, the hair is blow-dried straight from roots to ends. Finally, a hot iron is used to seal in the product.
After this, you can opt to leave the product in and wash it out at home after one to two days and then apply a mask, or to have it washed out in the salon. I opted for the former as I’m told that the effects last longer. To prolong the effects, I was also advised to avoid swimming for at least seven days, use sulphate-free shampoo and apply a weekly hair mask.
I’m thrilled with the results of the treatment – it’s quite a transformation! My hair is now smooth and shiny, the colour looks brighter and it feels so much healthier. Three weeks after treatment, the effects are still as good; it’s a lot easier to manage and I don’t even need to blow-dry it!” – Juliet Keys, Copy Editor
“As I was headed to an awards event, it was the perfect opportunity to get an upstyle (priced from $90) at Hera Salon, a new and modern-looking salon located in Tanglin Mall. The session started with a fantastic wash and massage, then I met Rain, my hairstylist for the day, to discuss what kind of look I wanted. Rain is a British expat who has spent many years in Dubai, the Caribbean and the UK, and I found her really easy to talk to.
On several occasions, I have had updos that were very flat or tight, or just felt like barbed wire from the amount of hairspray used! I explained to Rain that I liked a loose, casual updo with plenty of height at the top.
I loved the final look of my hairstyle, and when I went to the event so many people were complimenting my hair, which never happens. I was careful that evening, and the hairdo actually lasted me through another event the following night – bargain! It made me feel completely different and more groomed, and I will definitely try to do this more often, especially for balls and other special events.” – Rebecca Bisset, Editor in Chief

“My hair is always flat on top, especially when it’s long. It’s also getting a bit thinner as I grow older, so I was hoping to give it some body (without the frizz!). The hair enhancement service at Hairdreams is all about volumising or lengthening your existing hair. All the hair technicians are trained stylists, so you can also have a cut and colour while you are there.
There are different qualities of hair available. I got the Imperial quality – never dyed, all-natural colours. Quikkies are on an adhesive strip and cost around $200 for six strips of hair, while Nano Bonds are $400 for a set. I had two sets of Quikkies and one of Nano bonds. The hair looks and feels incredibly healthy and smooth – much more so than my own.
There are over 40 different colour options, plus you can custom blend them for different looks and hairstyles. Quikkies can be used for around three to four months, and then can be removed, washed and re-attached up to three times. Nano Bonds are individually attached to hair strands and sealed with a heat gun so they cannot be reused, but last around six months. I am super-happy with the results – the thickness is obvious, and it swings with the extra weight. Even when I wear up my new hairstyle in a ponytail it looks great!” – Danielle Rossetti, Integrated Communications Manager
“I always look forward to visiting Trimmings, whether it’s the quiet and exclusive Loewen salon, or the buzzier Tudor Court branch next to Tanglin Mall. The latter, where I went this time, boasts cosy wooden furnishings with chic black-and-white accents. Combine this with friendly service, top-notch hair treatments and the calming lemongrass scent that’s always present, and Trimmings has become one of my favourite spots.
After multiple rounds of bleaching, my hair was looking and feeling rather heavy and damaged. My attentive stylist Benson, who has over 15 years of experience, made sure he understood exactly what I wanted – a layered, shoulder-length bob that would be easy to maintain.
We started with a haircut ($75), then moved on to choosing a dark, neutral-toned colour ($185) that was closest to my natural hair shade. Thereafter, the Olaplex treatment ($80) was applied and washed off. After a quick trim and blow-dry, I walked out with lighter, smoother and healthier-looking hair, styled into the messy, beachy waves I’d always dreamt of having. From the consultation to the end, the process took three hours. And now, when I wear my hair straight and casual, many of my friends comment that I look younger and more relaxed. I love my new hairstyle!” – Anthia Chng, Hair & Beauty Editor
“Entering La Source Spa’s calming interior space, I was shown through to the salon side and introduced to colourist CK Karkhanis, who hails from LA. We chatted about the look I wanted to achieve – sun-kissed and effortless. She suggested darker lowlights and blonde highlights, and took my complexion, hair type and styling habits into account when choosing the shades and placement. (Balayage is painted freehand, which gives great control when applying.) She even showed me how she could paint the colour on to give the illusion of a slimmer jawline.
CK curates a colour palette using the best of the best, including imported Wella and L’Oreal shades that you won’t find elsewhere in Singapore. For me, she opted for a warm, sandy shade. After the colour had finished developing, she gave it a wash and applied a gloss treatment to enhance and help maintain my new locks. The total process took two and a half hours and cost $460.
I’m so thrilled with the hairstyle! To help keep my balayage looking its best, I’m advised to wash my hair less often and use a clarifying or violet shampoo. There’s also the option to come in for a 15-minute colour refresher in-between appointments, such as touching up the hairline or applying a gloss to re-pigment the blonde.” – Susannah Jaffer, Contributing Editor

“Located on the third floor of Velocity in Novena, this cosy Japanese hair salon is popular with both Japanese expats and locals. The customers were clearly comfortable with the stylists, chatting away as they got their hair done.
Plagued with dry and brittle ends from my old, grown-out highlights, I was excited to see what the moisturising IAU Cell Care Treatment ($85) could do for my damaged locks. Using Japanese IAU Cell Care products, my stylist Yuan started the three-step procedure with a spray-on that promotes elasticity. After that, he applied two types of creams that contain moisturising ingredients such as jojoba and macadamia nut oil, spreading them evenly through the strands. Once all the products had been applied, a machine continuously steam my hair for about 15 minutes while I enjoyed a relaxing neck and shoulder massage.
After a rinse and blow-dry, my hair looked less dry and felt much softer and smoother. There were still some flyaway hair strands, but the treatment can be done as often as once a month to help with that. Plus, it only takes 45 minutes, so it’s suitable as a lunchtime fix. I’m tempted to make this a regular!” – Lindsay Yap, Entertainment & Leisure Editor
