Custom bling for special occasions

Updated on 5th June 2018 by Susannah Jaffer |

Whether you’re commemorating a special occasion like an engagement or anniversary, or simply desire a gift for yourself or a loved one, a piece of bespoke jewellery feels extra special. After all, who can resist something that’s completely one-of-a-kind? If you’re keen to customise your creation, we sussed out the best bespoke jewellers in Singapore who can handle your project from start to finish with flair.

Madly Gems

With all its bespoke jewellery pieces made to your specifications by master craftsmen, Madly Gems is something a bit special. The team handcrafts each luxe creation in 18-carat gold, and they use a network of miners, gem cutters and partners around the world to ethically source the finest gemstones – we’ve heard some are rarer than diamonds, and no two are alike!

What’s more, the Madly Gems team want to make sure you’re part of the process from start to finish. How does it work? First off, get in touch with their team to set up an appointment to discuss your bespoke project – whether it be an engagement ring or an anniversary gift. Next, with your input, they’ll draft out a few design options, and will work with you till you’re happy with the final design. For more complex projects, 3D rendering will be done in their Italian workshop, where their finest jewellery pieces are made.

All in, the crafting of your special piece usually takes about four to eight weeks depending on the complexity of your design, so we advise planning ahead. As a guideline, the Madly Gems team advises you to allow at least two months from first meeting to holding your finished masterpiece. Take a look at their Instagram for a glimpse of their gorgeous bespoke creations!

Madly Gems is located at 72 Seng Poh Road, #01-63, 160072. By appointment only. For enquiries, email bespoke@madlygems.com or call 6650 1544.

a beautiful bespoke jewellery design by Joanne L

Joanne L Jewellery

Marrying sensuality with aesthetics to create timeless, imaginative designs, the handcrafted pieces by local jewellery brand Joanne L are elegant and bold. Founder Joanne Low is a mother of three and former lawyer, and is trained in gemology, metalsmithing, technical drawing and computer-aided design, and is also an Accredited Jewellery Professional and Diamonds Graduate with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

When it comes to your bespoke project, Joanne will discuss your preferences and ideas, as well as what story you want the special piece to tell. After establishing your price point, she’ll advise on the best materials, gemstones and finishing options for your budget in order to create the perfect piece.

You can select from a carefully curated selection of high-quality gemstones, which have been cut and polished by international master-cutters. They can also source a gem for you, work with one you already have, or help to redesign an existing piece of jewellery. Once you’re happy with the final design draft, the creation process begins, and typically takes between four and six weeks.

For more information about a custom project, email info@joannel.com or call 9138 6221.

a radiant bespoke jewellery design in the form of earrings by The Jewel Box

The Jewel Box

The one-of-a-kind bespoke jewellery pieces by The Jewel Box are fully customised by you and meticulously handcrafted – whether it’s an engagement or anniversary ring you desire, or perhaps a show-stopping necklace or earrings.

The customisation process starts by appointment at the showroom, located in Orchard. The Jewel Box team will take time to understand your requirements and desires, and will run through your selection of gemstones, plus your choice of gold or other precious metals.

For the next step, their artists hand-sketch your design, with the final version being done on the computer. Once you’re happy with your piece, it’s commissioned to only the best craftsmen to handle your gemstones with skill and care. What’s more, The Jewel Box invites you to return within a year to ensure the lasting quality of your bespoke piece.

Email bespoke@thejewelbox.com or call 6733 4100 to enquire.

a snapshot of the bespoke jewellery process by Khiards

Khiards Jewellers

Established in 1922, Khiards Jewellers is a family-owned business which prides itself on the bespoke jewellery process. As always, the whole process is completely personalised to you, and customising a piece of jewellery starts with your desires and ideas, from your choice of gems to whether you’d prefer yellow, rose or white gold or platinum (or a mix of two or more!). A design concept can be discussed in-branch, and their artists will draw up concepts for you approve.

Next up, each piece is fine-tuned with any desired subtle nuances in the design, like engraving. When it comes to the creation process, each gemstone is hand-set by skilled craftsmen and machine polished, resulting in a perfectly handcrafted piece of fine jewellery. Each piece of jewellery comes with certificates of authenticity on request, and comes with a two-year warranty on workmanship and repairs.

To discuss your custom bespoke project, email fahir@khiards.com or call 9008 4799.

choosing your gemstone as part of the bespoke jewellery design process with Choo Yilin

Choo Yilin

The Choo Yilin team want your bespoke jewellery piece to capture your emotions and memories perfectly – whether that’s the love between you and a partner, or your appreciation for a family member or best friend. Their bespoke service means full customisation at your fingertips, from initial consultation and design sketches to the final design, with you involved in the process every step of the way. When it comes to precious stones, they have a vast library of choice, from Type A jadeite to sapphires, rubies and spinels. A bespoke piece may take between six months to a year to craft, depending on how intricate your design is.

In terms of pricing, Choo Yilin has three tiers. The ‘Novel Encounter’ tier includes a gemstone of your choice, paired with an existing signature design. Great for special occasions, like anniversaries, this service begins from $1000.

The ‘Lasting Impressions’ tier includes a full draft of your jewellery, plus your choice of gemstone, which will be set in 9- or 18-carat gold. Ideal for engagement rings, this service ranges between $2000 to $10,000.

Finally, the ‘Ever After’ service goes even more in depth into the customisation process, with the team sourcing the finest jewels for your masterpiece. This is the jeweller’s most sought-after service and is limited to just a few exclusive appointments a year. The level of work and craftsmanship ranges between $6,000 to beyond $100,000 – think engagement rings or wedding bands.

Visit Choo Yilin at Mandarin Gallery, #02-23, 33A Orchard Road, 238897. For enquiries, email hello@chooyilin.com or call 6733 1131.

I am brilliant, too

I am brilliant, too is an initiative supporting talented Singapore jewellery designers who have a passion for fine jewellery and diamonds. This means you can create a bespoke jewellery creation that’s far from the mainstream. Every designer on ‘I am brilliant, too’ has been carefully selected by a board of local and international jewellery professionals. How does the process work? The customisation experience starts with a meeting with your designer about your expectations and desires for your piece, and will walk you through your stone selection and budget. After that, you will receive a visual of your creation which you can adjust until you’re happy with it. Then, it’s onto the exciting part – the making, and you’re invited to come and take a peek at the progress at any stage. The whole process from start to finish takes four to twelve weeks, depending on your design.

Make an appointment through their website or call +65 6235 1478 for enquiries.
