Whether you’re looking to design an engagement ring, wedding bands or simply a unique jewellery gift for your other half, there’s something extra special about creating something custom made.
When it comes to a bespoke ring, for creative types or those who like to be hands-on, creating a design from scratch is a thrilling process. You’re involved every step of the way, from viewing sketches to selecting your desired metals and gems.
But here’s what we want to know: how do you successfully work with your jeweller to bring your grand vision to life, minus the stress? We caught up with Singapore-based experts Clarence Yee and Cheryl Woon, co-founders of GIOIA Fine Jewellery — a bespoke jeweller specialising in gemstone designs — who share tips on how to make your experience as enjoyable and memorable as possible.
Tips for creating the perfect bespoke ring
Gemstones or diamonds?
The first step in your bespoke journey is settling on the right stone for you. Although they say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, Clarence says there’s a change in the air when it comes to ring trends. “Over the last year, we’ve seen a big increase in requests for coloured gemstones in engagement rings. From rubies or emeralds to sapphires or spinels, precious gemstones are actually much rarer than diamonds. They’re one of a kind.”
Discover the details
Your bespoke creation will be an investment, so take the time to get to know a bit more about it’s background and where it comes from. “We like to share the story behind each of our precious gemstones, which allows people to understand their rarity and unique history. Each stone is hand picked by us for its brilliant colour and quality,” shares Cheryl, GIOIA’s creative director. So, not only will your bespoke ring celebrate an exciting milestone, it will carry a meaningful story you and your loved one will treasure for years to come.
What’s the occasion?
When designing ‘the one’, remember to take into consideration what milestone your gem is commemorating. Is it an engagement, anniversary, or perhaps a birthday? “You could choose a birthstone gem to celebrate a birthday, or one in the shade of the receiver’s favourite colour. There are endless possibilities!
Well, it needs to be discussed! Thankfully, creating a unique piece of jewellery needn’t cost an arm and a leg, Clarence explains. “Custom jewellery does not necessarily need to be expensive, or cost you multiple months salaries. Be honest about how much you want to spend. A good jeweller will show you the best range of gemstones and finishes to suit your ring budget, and will put in every effort to make sure the finished design is just right.”
