As we spend more time in the bedroom than any other in the home, we really should be making the most of it! Planning what pieces to get can be a long (and sometimes frustrating) process in itself, not to mention finding the right store that suits your style and needs. There are so many things to consider – of course the bed, mattress, side tables, drawers, bedding – the list goes on. Glean some tips from these Expat Living readers who tell us where and why they picked out these furniture and furnishings for their bedrooms.
Heide von Maltzahn-Greilinger, German
“I’ve been living in Singapore since January 2017 with my husband, two daughters and son. We moved to Singapore for my husband’s work. Now that my girls are older, they have returned to Germany to further their studies.
I was looking for nice, high-quality bedsheets, cushions and towels for my home. As I’m from Europe, I’ve always known of the brand Lexington. I looked around for them and finally found their store in Dempsey. I bought towels as well as bedsheets and duvets – I love their quality, colours and style. The shop is also beautiful and the staff are very friendly and helpful – after visiting the store just one time, they already knew my name! There was also one young lady who was particularly helpful and gave suggestions that I really liked. I highly recommend Lexington as their products will make your room look special.
I also redecorated my son’s room, getting him new cushions, bed sheets, a duvet, as well as new towels for his bathroom – he just loves it! It looks fresh and young, great for a 13-year-old. The products at Lexington are definitely worth it, due to their excellent quality and beautiful designs.”

“We had moved into a larger apartment and so we needed a lot of new furniture all at once. A friend told us about Taylor B and we spent a number of weekends visiting the showroom to find what we needed.
I love the shopping experience in the showroom, and the staff are super helpful. When we visited there were three lovely large warehouse floors with huge variety, and I hear they have since added a fourth, which I can’t wait to see. We have bought a number of things including an enormous bed and a pair of lamps for the master bedroom as well as a round glass dining table with eight chairs, a console table and another lamp for the sitting room. Our final item was a lovely big rug for the sitting room. Next, we’re looking for another console table or cabinet and a long runner for the hallway, which thankfully will mean a few more trips to the shop!
We are extremely happy with our purchases so far. We love that all the pieces have hints of Asian qualities, but that they won’t look out of place when we return to the UK. Get there early on a Saturday and enjoy the fresh crêpes, to which my husband was particularly drawn!”

“We needed a bigger bed for our four-year-old daughter, partly for those bedtime stories, and those snuggle moments withmum and dad; there needed to be room for the three of us and the toys!
We had been aware of the Ni-Night brand through Expat Living, and we found it a really easy online shopping experience, with great support throughout. We ended up buying a single bed for Elena; it’s a standard size and so easy to find bedding for. We wanted something well made and of a classic timeless design that would survive through the childhood years, and we favour wood, as opposed to metal, for its warmth. We chose white so that it could be easily accessorised to suit different décor over the years, and the trundle underneath really helps keep the room tidy with its discreet storage. The headboard is also wide enough for small pieces such as nightlights. The mattress provided is also of excellent quality and comfortable – for adults too!
It’s a beautiful bed that our daughter loves playing in. There’s room for all her soft toys on it so it becomes a cosy play area as well. Most importantly, it’s comfortable for all of us at snuggle time and has made those moments even more special. We would definitely recommend people pop in and see the shop for inspiration.”
“We were looking to furnish our home from scratch and had no pre-conceived ideas when it came to furniture for the bedroom. As we were moving to Singapore within a few months, I took the time to research furniture and furnishing shops online. After looking online at a lot of beds, bedroom and general furniture available in Singapore, I fell in love with a lot of pieces showcased on the Originals website. I then visited Singapore once before moving the family, and my choices were confirmed.
I ended up buying all our bedroom furniture from Originals, including a lovely teak four-poster bed with clean and light lines, as well as wonderful turquoise cupboards from India. We also purchased our lovely round dining room table and chairs, for eight people. We recently had ten people over for dinner and we all managed to fit quite comfortably. Other purchases included wall décor, TV consoles and original antique pieces from India including old accounting tables, transformed into small coffee tables.
We love each piece and will ship each and every one back to our home country when we finally depart fromSingapore. Originals is worth the visit if you’re looking for beautiful furniture with character.”

“We were moving into a new home and, due to space constraints, were looking for a custom-made bed frame. We also wanted a unique design, and something stable –we believe a stable and firm bed is important so our lives won’t be rocky, even when we’re resting! In addition, most standard beds don’t come with the sideboard size we want.
Priscilla was browsing Expat Living magazine for renovation and design ideas and came across Gallery 278. When we visited the store, the shopping experience was marvellous; Felicia and the team really help and advise you, without the feeling of there being any obligations or commitment. They don’t just try and close the deal, even though we were eyeing up the very first design we spotted! They even set up a bed for us to give us a better idea of a design that wasn’t displayed in the showroom.
From seeing the showroom display and the mock-up bed, we gave our feedback and requirements, and they then presented us with a preliminary dimensional drawing. We had a couple more discussions and Felicia further enhanced the design and features.
We are definitely happy with the design and quality of the piece, as it has answered our requirements and expectations. Our advice would be to browse, look at various designs and take pictures of the one that’s close to what you want. Also, be upfront about your budget and give as much input as possible as to the pieces you require.”

“We went to European Bedding to replace a mattress we bought when we first arrived in Singapore. Like all expats, we needed to furnish a full home in very little time. We saw a good-looking bedframe with what we thought was a box spring underneath and bought it straight away. On delivery, though, we noticed the “springs” were actually just a plank. My husband’s back suffered on this mattress; also, as a Singaporean king size, it was 10cm shorter than the ones in Belgium!
Some ladies in the Belgium & Luxembourg Association of Singapore told me about European Bedding, so I went to their new showroom in Tiong Bahru. I was able to extensively try out the mattresses without being shy, while the store’s general manager, Thijs, explained things to me in Dutch.
We bought a package deal of the EB Back Care Perfect Latex Mattress with an adjustable slatted bed base. For us, it made perfect sense. We were able to customise the densities within the mattress so the two of us had our own preferred firmness and the slatted bed base was ideal for extra ventilation and easy cleaning. We’re very happy with our purchase and we wish we’d heard about European Bedding before buying the other bed set.
One tip: we all know it’s busy when you first arrive in Singapore and you want to settle in ASAP. But it’s better to spend more money on essential things like a good base and mattress than on decorative furniture or decorations. Also, pay attention to mattress sizes in Singapore compared to other countries!”
