Trying to find for a way to look younger without having to go under the knife? Ultherapy, a non-invasive facelift, may be your best bet!
We speak to Dr Ivan Puah, Medical Director at Amaris B. Clinic, on everything there is to know about this popular treatment.
How does it work?
Collagen is a natural protein that keeps skin firmed, toned and therefore youthful. As you get older, collagen loses its ability to stand up to the effects of gravity. Contrary to popular beliefs, there are no published medical studies proving that consuming collagen or applying collage-infused skincare directly helps in giving you supple skin. Collagen cream or skincare cannot penetrate the skin barrier, and the only way to rejuvenate collagen is by its own regrowth.
During each session if Ultherapy, ultrasound energy is used to trigger skin regeneration, stimulating the production of new collagen. The energy targets the deepest layers of the skin and can be used to lift skin around the eyebrows, and tighten the skin and reduce lines under the chin and neck, as well as around the delicate décolleté area.
Is it painful?
It varies from person to person. There may be some discomfort at the point when the ultrasound energy is delivered, but this is only a temporary sensation – and it’s a positive sign that the collagen-building process has been initiated.
Is it safe?
Ultherapy uses safe, time-tested ultrasound energy, which lifts and tightens the skin naturally without surgery or downtime. It’s the only non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment for skin firming and lifting.
How does it differ from other face-lifting procedures?
Ultherapy is the only non-surgical cosmetic procedure that uses focused ultrasound imaging to stimulate the growth of new collagen deep within the skin. Results are more effective because the doctor can see the layers of tissue targeted during the treatment and ensure the energy is focused to precisely where it’s needed – such as to create lifted cheekbones and a sculpted jawline.
Who is it most suited for?
Ultherapy is an ideal treatment for those who are concerned with sagging skin, jowls, skin laxity, drooping eyelids, lines and wrinkles on a crepey décolletage. It’s also suitable for both men and women.
How long does each session last?
The procedure takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes, depending on how many areas are treated. There may be slight redness for up to an hour or so afterwards, and a small percentage of patients may encounter a bit of swelling, tingling or tenderness. This effect is mild and only temporary.
How soon will I notice results?
Some patients see an initial effect right after their treatment, but the real results appear over three to six months as new collagen is produced, lifting and tightening the skin on the neck, chin and brow areas.
Unlike with a surgical face-lift, there’s no downtime; you can return to your normal activities directly after treatment. Think of it as the non-surgical, non-invasive way to a facelift – just without the downtime!
Patients treated with Ultherapy still have fresh, young collagen even after a year. Although nothing can put a stop to the ageing process, touch-up treatments done every six months will help to rebuild collagen.
